ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Deborah Wai Kapohe is a New Zealand based Opera Singer , about to
die on the stage of Hong Kong Opera as the leading lady in the tragic opera Pagliacci . But wait ! There is another side to this singer ...

Lurking underneath those opera wigs is an alternative folk/rock singer with a style influenced by Ani Difranco , Kate Bush and studying Ethnomusicology at University !

Please DON'T listen to Deborah Wai Kapohe if your CD collection contains only Top Ten albums ... ( but if it did you wouldn't be searching for something unique on CD Baby would you ? ).. Listen if you enjoy beautiful singing , highly trained guitar playing and musicianship .

Deborah loves to play the guitar sometimes beautifully and sometimes brutally by using plastic bags to distort it , playing it as a drum and searching for as many contrasting sounds as possible .

And her singing ? Deborah Wai Kapohe sings high and low and all around the place .You name it .

If you enjoy " I unwrap you " then please look for Deborah's 3rd album
" Elusive " which will be available on CD Baby in September . "Elusive" takes the acoustic sound of " I unwrap you " into an experimental but uniquely New Zealand sound with the use of traditional Maori Instruments , more experimental vocal sounds and the introduction of electronic instruments .

P.S " I unwrap you " was recorded and mixed in 2 days in Wellington , New Zealand . The result is an album which records Deborah Wai Kapohe playing in a room as opposed to a manufactured and highly produced sound .

Not only is she a wonderful singer, but quite an accomplished songwriter to boot
This album was funded from money won by Ms Wai Kapohe at the Rotorua Singing Competitions! It's a lovely NZ folk album, featuring the 10-string guitar and percussion of Sam Benge and the acoustic guitar and gorgeous vocals of Kapohe. Not only is she a wonderful singer, but quite an accomplished songwriter to boot. She penned all 11 songs here. You may wonder just how funky two acoustics can get and the answer is VERY! On the interestingly-titled Death the guitars and percussion create a cornucopia of groovy spanish-tinged rhythms. On the other hand, some of Deborah's vocal inflections are reminiscent of Gaelic vocalists, like Ireland's Marie Ni Bhraonain from Clannad. Recorded at Wellington Teachers College in 1999, 'I Unwrap You' is a testament to David Downes' engineering skills ? each track a sonic masterpiece! Well worth looking for. Deborah, Thanks for the CD received. What an excellent way to start a
Monday. I am very impressed. It's a beautiful recording. The primal
nature
of the work backed by sensitive guitar and powerful emotive percussion
is one of the most powerful albums I've heard in a while.
