notes
Vintage country and honky tonk with a splash of traditional Cajun music.
On this her first solo recording, Karen Collins has created an exciting blend of her two musical passions early country and Louisiana Cajun. Karen performs regularly with three groups The Blue Moon Cowgirls (acoustic country quartet with an emphasis on three part harmony), Squeeze Bayou (traditional Cajun & Zydeco dance music) and the Backroads Band (retro honky tonk country). Members from all three bands join Karen on this this recording along with vocalist friends Dede Wyland and Ric Sweeny.
The intricate harmonies of the Blue Moon Cowgirls shine on their five cuts along with the guitar accompaniment of guitar wizard, Ira Gitlin who adds creative passages to their sound.
The Squeeze Bayou cuts will have you up waltzing and doing the Cajun two step while the sound of the honky tonk numbers take you back to the road houses of the '50s.

Pure Vintage Roots music
author: DougYou just dont hear Pure music like this on the Radio here in the Uk, so when I discovered this album I bought it on listening to a couple of minutes of one track! Yes thats how sure I was that this was something special. I may be in rainy old England but when this goes on I may as well be on a road trip through Texas and Louisiana (if that exists!) This is singing from the heart and soul of America, great Country, Bluegrass and Cajun sounds, Karen has a sweet voice and the pickin is first class. In short I love this album!
CD has such sweet music that can be listened over and over
author: KhoaKaren Collins is such a sweet musician that one can feel through her singing and playing. All songs are so soothing, they can be enjoyed repeatedly. My favorite is Blue Moon, so melancholy and down to earth. Other songs, like L'annee de cinquant-sept and Grand Texas, just make one want to waltz and two-step.
It feels like home!
author: Ana COlonI loved this CD!! This music feels like nourishment to the soul. It feels like home. It's a must for anybody that appreciates this music that comes from the root of your being.
My favorite cd this year.
author: Lynn"Backroads & Bayous" is my favorite CD this year. The selections are well chosen, with each tune bearing its own signature. The material is in keeping with the theme, as cajun songs are comfortably tucked within the country songs. Each tune is distinct, with vocals ranging from powerful to haunting to sentimental to passionate. But there is a constant element: every note, every harmony, reveals definite purpose and fits just right. The music is mindful but uncontrived. Like Karen's voice, the CD production is polished yet maintains its valuable uniqueness and authenticity.
Good listening if you like country and Cajun music.
author: LEEIf you don't like the old time country music sound or traditional Cajun music, don't buy this CD. But if you do like those sounds, this CD has both. Karen, along with Blue Moon Cowgirls Ann Porcella and Dana Ward and guitarist Ira Gitlin take old country standards line TRADEMARK and DON'T COME HOME A-DRINKIN', throw in some non standards and even a non-country song, BLUE MOON, and deliver them with their pleasing harmony that makes you think of sitting on a porch after supper listening to just plain old country people playing plain old country music. The twist of traditional Cajun music, with the help of the band SQUEEZE BAYOU, just adds to the unique sound on the CD. Like I said, if you don't like old time country music or traditional Cajun music, don't buy this CD. But if you do, this should be a no-brainer.
