A member of NYC-based alt-folk band Bobtown, singer-songwriter Karen Dahlstrom makes her solo debut with "Gem State", a five-song collection of modern folk tales inspired by her home state of Idaho. Influenced by old time country, roots music and folk, Dahlstrom applies traditional Americana styles and instrumentation to new songs about life out West. The gem and ore mining camps of the nineteenth century are explored in the first two tracks, "The Miner's Bride" and "Galena", followed by "Starling", a tale of regret and loss. "Streets of Pocatello" tells the story of hard men in a rough railroad town, sung a cappella in the style of an Appalachian mountain ballad. The last song, "One More Time" is an ode to the idyllic, carefree summers of youth. The song is co-written by Kenny Siegal, who also engineered and produced the album at Old Soul Studios in Catskill, NY.
