It’s funny how things unfold. Sometimes you can try to make something happen and the Universe decides it’s not in the big plan. Then, out of nowhere, you find yourself doing something completely different... doors magically open inviting you to walk through them. That’s how Saprema (Sanskrit for “with Love”) was born.

I’ve always loved to sing. A few years ago my yoga practice and my love of singing converged at a kirtan. That evening, I felt God tap me on the shoulder and say, “Tag, you’re it.” I was lit from within. At long last, my voice had found a home chanting to the Divine.

Two months later, I found myself the proud owner of a new harmonium, a yellow legal pad and a sharpie. Chants started writing themselves. My chanting practice became a gateway to tap into a sense of peace within myself I’d had a hard time finding through asana or meditation alone.

I then met Mike at Shine Yoga Center, my yoga home. He shared a similar love of chanting, so we started to chant together on a regular basis. Taking turns on the harmonium, we would sing and harmonize, finding these lovely grooves as our chants repeated, merged, unfolded, and swam together.

As my new practice took root, something told me to share my music. I started taking my harmonium to Shine and began to chant and play during my classes. Yet, I was terrified. I’d start to play, close my eyes and wonder if anyone would be left in class when I opened them. To my delight, people began to share the cool experiences they were having while I chanted, and many people told me I had a beautiful voice. Eventually, people started asking, “When’s your cd coming out?” After months of hearing this question, I decided maybe this WAS the Universe’s big plan. My trusty producer opened the final door and voila! Saprema.... I hope you like it.
