Album Notes

Over the last ten years, Karen Mack has established herself as one of the most popular singer/songwriters in many of New York City's top clubs and performance spaces. With her debut album, "Take That," Mack translates her onstage presence and theatricality into a diverse collection of pop/rock originals that highlight her vocal talents, songwriting skills and ability to connect with an audience. In 2001, she was recognized by the Manhattan Association of Clubs, a NYC based organization which represents over 50 clubs and hundreds of performances from music rooms across the country, as the year's Best Pop Vocalist and her original song "I Am Home" was honored as Outstanding Song of the Year by that group, in conjunction with ASCAP. Her varied musical influences are apparent in her style, which meshes a warm jazz/folk sensibility and affinity for richly textured vocal harmony with the intensity of a modern pop/rock sound, creating a truly unique listening experience, whether you're looking for moving ballads or fierce rockers. LGNY says "in addition to her sense of humor, she has the kind of voice one longs to hear... her flawless placement, appealing style and dead on performance are electrifying... she'll give you chills she's that good!" and The Village Voice echoes "Mack can sock anything with a rock beat out of the ballpark". "Take That" was produced by award winning songwriter Michael Holland (see "Very Attractive Out Musical Genius"), with whom Mack has a long established working relationship (see "Happy Hour" and "Riding On Coattails"). As with all their collaborations, this album boasts smart arrangements, thoughtful lyrics, strong instrumentation and incredible vocals. Karen wears a size 5 shoe and makes an excellent potato salad. Mack and Holland--Imaginative, intelligent, nuanced--in short, fabulous!
author: Dolly Spalding
I got my Karen Mack CD today from CD Baby, and I must say, I think that she probably can sing anything! The quality of her voice is bright but never shrill, well calibrated, full of nuance and emotion, nicely controlled. I particularly like her subtle turns of phrase, her articulation, her stunning musicality. And as far as Michael Holland's arrangements and playing are concerned, well, he's simply terrific! I really like what he did with the strings (real cello, violins, viola), and of course, his deft piano playing (not to mention inspired guitar). A careful listener (I am such) can find everything to admire in the imaginative and intelligent songwriting, the witty and/or moving lyrics and the accompaniment, which is equilibrated and perfectly realized, with melodious underscoring that never gets in the way, just enhances (and uses such innovative instrument combinations). Of special interest are such songs as "Different for Girls," "Astronaut," "I Remember You," "I Am Home," and especially (maybe my favorite) "Long Goodbyes" that just beg to become an integral part of the inner soundtrack of any discerning listener.
