Album Notes

The Breaking of Our Days, Karli Fairbanks' second full length album was recorded by the great Seattle producer/engineer Kory Kruckenberg. Kory has worked on several other great records recently including both Damien Jurado and J. Tillman's most recent releases. Karli's album has ten songs on it that wind around country, blues, folk and rock all with a running thread of palatable pop sensibility. The melodies are catchy but remembered by their own unique flavor, layered with three part harmonies. The backing band on each song is a solid collection of Northwest musicians and the arrangement of each song carries a dynamic that also makes it's way throughout the whole album, creating a well rounded experience.

Lyrically, the album carries a running theme of lost and confused relationships with a subtle hope for some unique situation between two people that can redeem the tragedy of brokenness and hurt in the world. Where Karli's debut album, Bitter Blue, was despairingly full of minor keys and weepy melodies, this new album brings to life a new side of her writing. With more exploration of rhythm, phrasing and full instrumentation on each song the range of feeling is wider but does not exclude the forlorn weariness found on her first album.

Karli is a musician and songwriter from Spokane, Washington. She not only tours frequently around the Northwest and West Coast with her music, but is also a visual artist of many kinds. Working with illustration, graphic design, fine art and many more mediums. Check out her website for tour dates and to see some of her visual art.

REVIEWS

Karli’s stellar debut, “Bitter Blue,” was a beautifully sedate affair with hushed vocals drifting over ghostly folk songs. On “The Breaking of Our Days,” she has kept the beauty of her songwriting intact but decided to kick the energy level up a notch with steel-tinged country shuffles, folk-blues burners, and some time-tested grooves from the lonely, indie-Americana songbook. She has also expanded the sonic palette on this record, enlisting a number a great Northwest players who help give this album a cohesive yet evolving sound. Her soulful voice is more present, more assured, as well. All in all, “The Breaking of Our Days” is a step up from what was already an impressive debut.
