I purchased this album because of the hot jams I came across on Karl Koch's Myspace page. Do consider this album if you are into a funky beat.

An album with not-so-typical samples, moving into unique territories.
author: John Book, Music For America
I've been hinting at his album for over a month, saying I'll review it soon, I'll review it soon. Now, you'll find out what I've been talking about.
Karlophone is the name he goes by, and what you hear on I Must Find This Karlphone... is electronic-based genius, taking in hip-hop, early/mid-90's-era Mo' Wax, some DJ Shadow, DJ Vadim, and RJD2. He's not about telling and sharing stories, at least not completely, so what does he do? Build sound pictures that are more than just the simple 4/4 or going down roads where everything is backed by the latest funk loop. His use of not-so-typical samples could easily lead people to call him someone who is trying to be a hipster, but manages to stay one step of the tags by moving to new territory with each passing song.
There were moments where I felt a song could have benefitted from a barrage of beats, and portions where the beat quota is heavy but could have been more effective without them. But Karlophone is the producer and creator, not me, and what he is capable of doing will make a lot of producers and DJ's stand up and take notice, as they should. (Favorites include "Now Comes A Question", ""The Other End Of The Friend", and "The Old Alma Mater".)
