karmacanic .Biography
"Karmacanic, a breath of fresh, but familiar sound in a time severely lacking female pipes on alternative radio play lists." - Spencer, Morning Show host at 92.9 KJEE Santa Barbara's Modern Rock
Karmacanic is female fronted rock band from Santa Barbara California. Although their history as a band is fairly short at a little over 1 year, their accomplishments reveal their talent, drive, and work ethic.
In March of 2001 karmacanic (then called The Difference Engine) consistently maintained the #1 slot in the "Pop" category at Farmclub.com, a music industry website that allows listeners to vote on their favorite new artist.
In April of 2001 the band was featured on the A&R tip website Earfood.net. They lauded the band, "This is easily the most solid self-produced demo to come across our desks at Earfood.net." During their 2 week stay on the website karmacanic's mp3 attained the highest amount of downloads in Earfood's history.
At a sold-out show on April 3rd in downtown Santa Barbara, Grammy-nominated producer Scott Mathews approached the band. Scott's client list ranges from Van Morrison to Eric Clapton. In the summer of 2001, Scott signed on as the band's producer and from June to August of 2001 karmacanic recorded a 6-song EP. "They're my favorite unsigned band. As a rule, I have but two rules; 1) No rules 2) No bands. In my experience in the studio it is more than rare to get that; "worth more than the sum of it's parts" quality in bands. These Santa Barbarians are my favorite contradiction to that theory. Amazing songs, musicians, voice and vision."
In January of 2002 karmacanic opened for Dishwalla at their show in Santa Barbara California.
In March of 2002 karmacanic was featured as "Artist of the Month" on 8ballradio.com a national web-radio company based in Boston. Scott Parent, the Program Director at 8ballradio explains, "Karmacanic is a breath of fresh air in a testosterone dominated modern rock world. The mix of aggressive guitars & lush electronic soundscapes coupled with Kelly Hoyer's angelic voice makes for one hell of a musical experience. It also doesn't hurt that this band knows how to rock live too!"
Currently karmacanic is grabbing the attention of the Santa Barbara music scene with the help of 92.9 KJEE morning show host Spencer who has recently taking a liking to the band. This liking has given way to on air promotion, including live and recorded commercials promoting shows, which in turn leads to increased fan base and packed shows.
The core of karmacanic is a synthesis of angelic vocals, thick guitar sounds, the electronic medium, and catchy songwriting. By bringing each member's uniquely different musical past to the table, karmacanic creates a highly textured yet sharp sound that is truly fresh.

This band rocks. There is no mincing words when it comes to karmacanic. When you combine a grammy nominated producer with a bunch of young music prodigies from Santa Barbara California, your ears are treated to a sonic palatte that crushes "girl rock" competition. Karmacanic has mastered the creative use of samplers while keeping the songwriting simple and memorable. The guitar sound is loud enough to knock over a building while Hoyers vocals remain as fragile and delicate as glass. Keep an eye out for this band, for I predict very large things out of them.
