I imagine Shayne’s work like a child’s emotional processes unfolding on a rainy day, given the expressive capacity and talented hand of an enormously sensitive composer. The melancholy he expresses is touching without relent because it is, like a child’s, without object, or even an aftertaste of bitter; you will not be bored by Shayne’s first album because his work is so singularly humble that one cannot help but relate and listen with compassion to what I will call, without irony, his poet’s voice. Does Shayne find balance in forward movement? It is easy to visualize the youth walking lonely through Vancouver, adjusting his pace to afford harmony to the rhythms and tones of a metropolis wasted thin by anxiety that would otherwise overwhelm the sounds of the ancient, thoughtful wilderness unselfconsciously undressing and growing fat around it. Shayne’s step orders the city’s sounds and makes space for this other soundtrack-- he finds a way to register his environment as an aesthetic triumph, though it is not; to my mind, this is what is expressed in Beginning, what makes it such a worthy accomplishment and surprising first effort. Next, I hope that we will hear from Shayne a more focused project, where his aesthetic wisdom will achieve even greater impact.

Incredible. When your musical appreciation matures and you begin to look for beautiful sonic expressions that flow with your life, this CD will fit perfectly. Mixing soundtrack ambience and just the right amount of beats, Beginning sounds amazingly good. It's impossible not to 'see' a filmscore in your mind as you listen. Cool and sophisticated, but also simple and spacious. Think and contemplate or chill and relax, it's that good. Highest recommendation.
