Mr. Asche was awarded as a semifinalist in the prestigious 2005 Thelonius Monk International Guitar Competition. In 2005 Kyle Asche’s debut album as a leader was released, The Hook Up (Orgin/OA2), and was very well received throughout the USA in the media and radio. Jazz Times stated, “Asche displays a beautiful sound and a well-developed melodic sense." Mr. Asche’s highly anticipated second CD as a leader, Blues For Mel (Tippin’), places himin the company of legendary elder jazz statesman of the organ, Melvin Rhyne (Wes Montgomery Trio from the 1960s), and Chicago based drummer George Fludas (Ray Brown, Cedar Walton Trios). This swinging album includes original compositions by both Kyle Asche and Melvin Rhyne in addition to other jazz classics.

Hard to think of anyone who will dislike this set.
The continuing popularity of the organ-guitar-trio format brings together elements of hard grooving sounds of the 1960s and the smoother stylish effects of recent years. The result is often good, sometimes more so. This set is particularly attractive in that it has these two basic elements not only in musical terms but also in personnel. Guitarist Kyle Asche is a young musician who has been active in Chicago for the past decade while his principal partner here is Melvin Rhyne, a veteran organist whose jazz cv ranges from 1950s dates with Rahsaan Roland Kirk through 1960s sessions with Wes Montgomery to leadership of his own bands in which he teamed with artists such as Blue Mitchell and Brian Lynch. The third member of this band is drummer George Fludas, who has worked with jazzmen such as Ray Brown and Cedar Walton. The combined experience of these three men is such that an excellent CD is offered to the many fans, both old and young, of this kind of music. Two of the tracks are compositions by Kyle, with four from Melvin alongside pieces such as Luiz Bonfa's 'Gentle Rain' and Charlie Shavers' 'Swedish Schnapps'. Hard to think of anyone who will dislike this set.
