Returning with a vengeance! The Rising Anger takes KATAGORY Vs evolution a bit further than New Breed of Rebellion...with the core of the groups progressiveness shining through. Katagory V has become a very tight unit on The Rising Anger! PROGRESSIVE POWER METAL is what is heard here, but sounding like themselves and not some rehashed copycat band. Aggressive production that slaps you to attention and great performances from each and every member.

The American band Katagory5 has just released their full-length CD "A new breed of rebellion" on the American Prog/Power Metal label METALAGES RECORDS. We already reviewed their demos and independent releases in the past, but now we can finally review an official label release of this talented band.

Katagory 5 is playing high class 80s US Power Metal in the style of Fates Warning, Anvil, Jag Panzer, Virgin Steele, Lizzy Borden, Blanace of Power and very early Queensryche. The band has a great high pitched singer (Lynn Allers), and on their CD we can find 9 tracks.

The melodic prog/power metal of Katagory 5 sounds very impressive, especially the fantastic songs 'Turn to Grey', 'No Response', 'Chrono-logic' and 'In Dark Night'. Finally a new US band playing Metal the way new US bands used to sound some 15 years ago.

I never heard of this band out of Utah. They are a 5-piece with a sophomore 9-song effort out that is 51 minutes. Only 3 of these songs are under the 5-minute mark and the rest are over or well over 6 or 7 minutes apiece. They are reminiscent of Fates Warning and Balance Of Power with a Canadian sound (think of Iron Rain or Empyria) with good lead and background vocals. The songs are chockful of rhythms and leadwork, so there's no substance for boredom. These songs have their own identity and creativity besides being lengthy and having enough body to keep them interesting at all times. A very talented and likeable band for sure and they already have a slated 2005 release for another album, so stay tuned!

People are asking me why do I feel that I am born on the wrong side of the ocean. Well except that I strongly adore (not) the presidential abilities of Junior it is known that I have a “crush” for bands that come from USA. Why is that? Well because American power metal, or what is left of it, can proudly claim to keep the term “power” in its label.

Katagory V (weird name indeed) is a proud bearer of the flag of this genre. “A New Breed Of Rebellion” is their second album, Released from Metalages Records, and compared to their first effort I think this one is twice as good! Their sound brings in mind again a fusion of Vicious Rumors (respect) and Fates Warning (of the “No Exit” Era). So as you can imagine the material here is a combination of power and technical metal. The difference between technical and progressive is that technical acts don’t waste our time usually with solos upon solos and so on.

Katagory V is technical (take the time and listen what the bass has to say in this album, Dustin you are a killer player man!) but never lucks the suitable material for head banging. The guitars are spiting riffs constantly while Allers will bring in mind at times Mr. Alder. The production is very good, quite American I should say (melodic and powerful that is) while the artwork is very nice and a bit 80’s like. In conclusion I am sure to say that “A New Breed Of Rebellion” will make its way in our best of 2004 list. Check it out immediately!

Katagory V is the name of a kick ass, awesome US Metal band with progressive influences formed in late '99 in The Salt Lake Valley of Utah! These guys are really good and it makes my days looking brighter for sure with their outstanding form of Metal music. They've released a debut album in 2001 entitled "Present Day" so had to wait a few years for a next effort and check it out, here it is and how. The guys from Metalages Records just delivered me one of the best US Prog Metal bands of 2004.

The voice of Lynn Allers reminds me a lot of Ray Alder (Fates Warning). Musically, I’d like to compare them with bands like: Power of Omens, Syris, Fates Warning or Queensryche. The opener starts excellent and this is a song more in the typical US Metal style without the prog influences, just amazing! The rest of the entire album breeds a fantastic mixture of US Power and Progressive Metal, nothing more-nothing less."Turn To Grey' per example, check out the incredible combination of bass, drums and guitar lines with solid, well fitting vocals...you ain't hear nothing yet!

Also very special is the title track 'A New Breed of Rebellion'. First part of the entire song is played with acoustic guitars and a lot of passion but turns into a real gunner after almost three minutes. Passion, intensity, feeling...they knows how to play it all with style. Looking for a bass demonstration, go for a song called 'A Peaceful Act of Terrorism'. Bass player Dustin Mitchell shows you the way how the handle a loaded bass guitar in the best possible ways. Fortunately, that's exactly what he's fellow band members and guitarists Trevor Asire, Curtis Morrell do. These brothers are so damn skilled; the pleasures are at my site. I don't want to forget to mention the name Matt Suiter because he keeps on knocking the drum skins real hard with several forms of energy, good job Matt!

'Chrono-Logic' and 'In Dark Night' are real great without one single word of regrets. No time to mess around; stay in front of your speakers to enjoy these wonderful sounds of steel. To shut all thing off is the final track called 'One Last Time' taht awaits you. It's an easy song with some kind of sentimental lyrics. If you like it that way or not, I’ve enjoyed the album with all of my heart from beginning till the end. Maniacs of US Metal ala Fates Warning... give this piece a shot. Katagory V is working on new songs and I’m the one who's really looking forward to that special day the new album is finally done and ready to conquer the earth! US Metal-Precious Metal!!!

Pure 100% heavy metal. This band absolutely keeps the flame of metal alive. The band play a brand of metal with a touch of power metal, but are more along the lines of say Savatage and some of those metal bands on Metal Blade during the 80's. The vocals are clear, but powerful and do more than get the job done. Metal runs through this bands veins.

Picture, if you will, a bluish-green atmosphere, smothered in a weaving fog, hiding remnants of a city in ruins. In the sky, a splintered asteroid floats, a testament to the shattered remains of this world. In the forefront, a small girl holds her doll and the hand of a wicked hot brunette, who, instead of a doll, is holding a gun. This is the image Katagory V greets us with via their new release, "A New Breed of Rebellion". It's always a good thing when this much thought goes into a cover; you know that the music will mirror this effort as well.

Katagory V sounds, at times, like Fates Warning. (At least they don't sound like Men Without Hats.) Take the second track, 'Turn to Grey'. The song bludgeons you at the outset, thumping bass and drums accompanied with an intricate guitar part, and then singer Lynn Allers joins in, sounding impressively like Ray Alder. "My mind is on overload, all my emotions turn to grey ... turn to grey!" Powerful chorus, and this is Allers strongest moment on the entire disk.

The title track, 'A New Breed of Rebellion', begins with a ghostly guitar piece, just Allers and the guitar telling the tale. Allers sings lower on this song, and you think it's going to continue as this slow, acoustic track ... right up until about three minutes into the song. Then the drums and bass kick in, electric guitar, and you get another progressive metal construction. The song gets a little repetitive after 7 minutes, but it shows that Katagory V can change speeds and tempo and make it work.

'A Peaceful Act of Terrorism' is interesting, just by the title alone. Bassist Dustin Mitchell drives this song along, with expert and almost funky bass playing, entrenched in a purely metal sound. With lyrics like, "No regard for life, your views a religion, your eyes closed to the facts ... and you'd kill for your passion," these guys offer a pretty poignant portrait of terrorists today. The guitar solo here, either by Trevor Asire or Curtis Morell, is one of the strongest on the disk.

Another 7-minute song, 'Your Dreams', will make you think of Fates Warning again. The vocals don't start until about a two-minute musical passage. On this song, Allers explores his higher range during the chorus with the line, "reaching out my hand," and even though it is layered with other vocals, it doesn't really work. Still, that's nitpicking; the double bass and overall awesome drumming at the second part of the song, called 'Soul Traveler', again shows Katagory V nailing it. Plus, Allers lets lose a scream later that shows he can wail with the best of them.

The wrap things up with 'One Last Time', a sad, slow song that conveys a real sense of longing. "I'm on the outside looking in, the wind grows cold as I begin to cry ..." Good, depressing stuff.

No, "A New Breed of Rebellion" isn't something you've never heard before. But if you haven't heard them, then it's something good you haven't heard before. With intelligent lyrics, good musicianship and a futuristic album theme, these guys are definitely worth your time and your money.
