Album Notes

Kate Gaffney released her album, The New Then, in Philadelphia at World Cafe Live on Friday September 30th.

Featured on NBC-10's 10! Show to promote her release, Gaffney has created quite a buzz in Philadelphia with her honest music and shameless self-promotion. The music rocks, it rolls and it lulls you into a place of peace. It's a little something for everyone.

Welcome to "The New Then"!

Explores ambivilance toward committment with full rich voice
author: Joe Del Priore

Along with the music itself building on sounds of the 70's to 90's, the attitude here evolves from the hopeful, tentative romanticism of her first release, Highways, reflecting her youth, to an ambivilance toward committment, mirroring a more mature, tempered notion of love.In her full, deep voice, she explores wanting security and needing freedom. Losing oneself in another disrupts artistic discipline, impedes self discovery, weakens self worth, messes with identity. Yet the longing in her tone undermines her determined words to explore flight. A sadness born of wordly experience from someone who's spent lots of time in her car on anxiety highways lends legitimacy to the art. Throaty, twangy vocals, supported by strong Jesse Lundy guitar work and images immersed in nature reflect her obsession with bittersweet discovery. I wish there were more uptempo numbers like "Tired Wired", but her country blues pallette is otherwise quite colorful.
