Album Notes

"Butterfly Bones features a particularly healthy fifteen self-penned numbers... smartly arranged piano-led pieces like the attractive Stop Me, the sparse beauty of Clarity, the ambitious sweep of Only Sky and the unpredictable delight of closer Does It Really Matter."
- Rock'n'Reel Magazine (July/August 2007)

Butterfly Bones has a shimmering, strong yet ethereal sound, centred around Kathie Touin's shifting, layered harmonies and rich arrangements. It moves easily from light to shadow and back, exploring a range of moods and emotions. Her lyrics are original; images and word-play effortlessly blended. Her work has been compared to that of Tori Amos, Aimee Mann and Alanis Morissette.

Kathie grew up in California. At age seven she began weekly classical piano lessons, then as a teenager ventured into rock and jazz. Kathie joined her first band at 14, and around the same time began writing songs. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, before returning to California.

Frustrated with a series of bands that never seemed to progress, Kathie went solo. She was snapped up by an independent label and released her first album, a collection of classical solo piano pieces.

She spent five years living in the Pacific Northwest in the more rural environs of Seattle, Washington, where she continued to develop her songwriting.

In 2003, Kathie married an Englishman and moved to London, where she recorded her latest album, Butterfly Bones. She continues to write and record in her own studio.

Kathie sent me her CD to review, and I thought it was FANTASTIC! I still listen to it often, loving it more each time. Butterfly Bones is such a clever name for the album, and each song has it's own distinct personality. Kathie's arrangements are tight, and her voice is gorgeous.
