Album Notes

BIO for KATHY ZIMMER

Born and raised in rural Nebraska, Kathy grew up singing “wash tub bass”-style folk music with her family--think accordions and out-of-tune farmhouse pianos, plus lots of voices singing harmony at the tops of their lungs. She learned guitar at an early age and accompanied herself as she sang for church services and various small town gigs, including rodeos, parades and county fairs.

Kathy attended college at the University of Nebraska as a music major and quickly fell in love with the genre of classical art song. She continued to pursue her musical development by completing a Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio.

Absorbing all of these musical influences as well as the sights and sounds of her newest home, New York City, Kathy now creates music which is sophisticated and naïve, polished and quirky; her sound is at once fresh and new while at the same time vintage and refined. She performs with her two backup singers, the Sugar Bowls, and her band, the Sunshine Banned, making early 70s-era folk pop with a focus on beautiful voices expressing sweet regret and romantic fancy.

I met Kathy a couple of years ago, when there were few enough people at her gigs that I could take pictures from anywhere. I don't get to NYC much any more, so I don't know for sure, but I bet her shows are crowded now! This album took me back to why I fell in love at the first show I attended. I always dreamed of having a woman sing beautiful songs to me - Kathy makes me feel like that, though she barely knows me. This album, Spare Key, is another strong link in a beautiful chain of unique, sophisticated yet approachable music that IS Kathy Aimmer!
