Album Notes

KATIE THOMPSON TO RELEASE FAN-FUNDED ALBUM

West Coast singer/songwriter Katie Thompson is about to release her second album Impossible – and what makes the record extraordinary is that it’s one of only a handful worldwide that has been funded by a fan base.

Her debut album, Tall Poppy was released in 2009. The record caught the attention of music fans on international funding website Sellaband, in which people can buy in to the career of an artist, with the aim of helping them hit the US$50,000 needed to record and release an album.

Katie was one of the fastest-ever artists to achieve this and the first single Gold As Gold, is set for release in January 2011.

Renowned British producer Greg Haver (OpShop, Manic Street Preachers, Melanie C) was originally asked by the bosses at Sellaband to find Katie a producer to work with, but he was so impressed with her vocal ability that he took on the project himself.

“Katie is a really great singer with a hugely emotive voice. Her music is reminiscent of the current British folk sound of Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons, but what I like is that vocally she doesn’t really sound like anyone else,” he said.

Impossible was recorded at Modern World Studios in the UK with award-winning engineer Clint Murphy and a team of British and Kiwi musicians on board for the recording, including Katie’s brother Chris on guitar and keyboards.

Katie’s songwriting ability also attracted the attention of OpShop drummer Bobby Kennedy, who wrote the track Roll In Tide and put it forward for inclusion on the record, as did veteran Welsh band The Afternoons who wrote the track, Fading Fast. The resulting album is a treasure trove of rare and beautiful songs which blend elements of pop, folk and country and which Katie describes as an ‘honest portrayal’ of her life.

“The first single, Good As Gold was inspired by the women around me - my mother and some close friends. I started writing this song after I'd said to one of them ‘don't worry about what anyone else thinks or expects you to do - this is your life’. Hence the line ‘just be yourself – you’re good as gold’. We all worry far too much about what others think and I wrote this song as a reminder (partly to myself) to be true to yourself.”

"Impossible"

Katie Thompson, is a Country/Pop singer/song writer from a wee town called Hokitika in the South Island of New Zealand. Katie's latest album titled 'Impossible' was made possible through Sellaband, and Katie is one of the fastest artists to raise $50,000 USD, and was supported by 295 believers who funded the album. Katie's first album is titled 'Tall Poppy', and features 12 songs on it. Personally after puchasing that album, I was so impressed, I was extremely enthusiastic about the release of Katie's next album 'Impossible'. 'Impossible' was released in 2011 and features 11 songs: Impossible Always Present Good As Gold Curious Disgrace Roll In Tide Keep Your Memory Cruel To Be Kind Fading Fast Wanted You To Call The Penny Drops Wild Weather Katie wrote all of the songs, excluding Roll In Tide, Fading Fast, and Wild Weather. The first time I heard the album 'Impossible', I really enjoyed the song 'Good As Gold', as Katie had released the music video for it previous to the album coming out, so it was good to know one of the songs and be able to sing along to it. ' Good As Gold' is an upbeat 'get up and go' song that I find hard not to tap my feet to. It is a great 'pick me up' song to put you in a good mood, whether you are feeling a bit down, or the gloomy weather is taking its toll outside, its a guaranteed 'feel good' song. If you get the chance to watch the music video, they just looked like they had so much fun with making it, which matches the song's uplifting lyrics. 'Cruel To Be Kind' was the first song that I really liked the first time I listened to the whole album. I liked the lyrics, and Katie has such a soft, crisp, crystal clear and angelic voice. You can understand every word she is singing, and she is a 'natural' on the guitar. Katie came up with the awesome idea for people all around the world to send in pictures of 'hearts' and put them all together in a very creative video, with a very personal touch from her fans. The 'official' music video of Impossible was a real treat too, with a very simple and natural theme to it. If I would have to compare Katie to another singer/band, I would have to say that she sounds a bit like 'Killing Heidi' (an Australian Rock Band). Although I really think Katie has her very own sound, which I feel would be admired by both the older and younger generations. I was not a Country fan at all before hearing Katie's music. The first song I ever heard was called 29 Candles, a tribute song to the 29 miners whose souls were lost in an explosion in 2009 at Pike River Mine. Katie wrote and sang this very emotional, and passionate song, which bought tears to my eyes. It takes a very special kind of person to be able to compose and touch people through music, which Katie seems to be able to do with elegance and flair. In November 2011, Katie was chosen to perform as the opening act for Sir Elton John here in New Zealand. Katie is a natural on stage and had a radiant stage presence in front of a crowd of 35,000+ people. So even if you are not a Country fan, please dont let that discourage you from having a listen to Katie Thompson, Im glad I did. She has converted me and I was more of a rock/punk only listener. Katie has a pure gold voice that Im glad she is sharing in her music with the rest of the world.

"Impossible" is One of my Favorite Albums of All Time

With Katie Thompson's 2nd album, "Impossible", it looks like it is everything BUT impossible! In January, Katie released her first single from the album, "Good As Gold" and within a couple days, "Good As Gold" climbed the New Zealand iTunes Top 100 Country Songs chart as it shot up to #1 on January 25, 2011...bumping Taylor Swift's "Mine" and "You Belong With Me" to 2nd and 3rd place. Katie's album "Impossible" was officially released in early March and it didn't take long to climb to the top spot on IndieCharts.com ratings for the Country/Acoustic category and now, Katie Thompson is a nominee for two of the highest awards in New Zealand Country music - the "2011 Country Female Artist of the Year" and the "Horizon" award. As with every great album, inspiration comes from many sources and this album is no exception. The title track, "Impossible" was written with some of life's experiences Katie's friends have undergone trying to find "Mr. Right". There are many ballads...very, very good ballads...that were born out of personal reasons. In my opinion, "Impossible", "Good As Gold", and "Penny Drops" could all top the charts at any given time, and not just one genre, but many. I can also see any song on this album being used as sound tracks in film and commercials. Unlike her debut album, "Tall Poppy", Katie has created a very unique sound with "Impossible". You will hear more of a Pop/Country flavor with the up tempo songs and find yourself getting lost in Katie's silky smooth melodies in the ballads. I look forward to seeing Katie gain world-wide recognition with this album, because an album of this quality should be played on radio stations in every country. "Impossible" is definitely one of my all-time favorites and I am quite happy having added it to my music library. Wolfman
