Album Notes

The Los Angeles Times says: “extemporaneous mastery rare, perhaps unique, in the annals of the viola.” San Francisco Examiner called her “stunningly talented and imaginative...”, and Billboard magazine said she has “a relaxed and highly professional air...” Her first solo release, "Add Viola and Stir" is a compilation of some of the favorite styles Katrina Wreede performs and composes in.

Katrina Wreede, composer and violist, has been a professional symphony musician, a jazz violist, a member of the ground-breaking Turtle Island String Quartet, a concert soloist, a belly dancer, a police finger-printer, a strolling, rhinestone-studded “continental” violinist for royalty, a non-denominational wedding officiant, a player of Italian, Tango Nuevo, Persian, and Roma music and a composer for soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestras, film, and dance.

Her compositions are performed internationally by chamber ensembles and orchestras, including the Ahn Trio, David Parsons Dance Troupe, the Omaha Symphony, Boston Chamber Orchestra, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestra Rosario in Argentina.

She is a founding faculty member of the John Adams Young Composer Program and taught composition to exceptional youth for the American Composers Forum starting in 1998. She also conducts clinics around the country, including “My Goldfish Died” blues for strings, and “Composing Together” a collaborative classroom composition project, at K-12, university, conservatory, and professional conferences.

Moody Brew

In her latest CD, Katrina Wreede has brewed up a storm. This aromatic collection is a blend of styles, serving up viola sounds as fresh as your morning cup of Jamaican High Mountain.. From intimate cabaret to clashing counterpoints, each piece is soundly constructed and convincingly played with savory accompaniments from kindred spirits on piano, accordion , bass, and harp. Combining composed and free passages, familiar forms with added cupolas and corridors, these works are a playful contribution to boundary- crossing contemporary music.

Eclectic collection of cool tunes in various musical styles ranging from jazz to tango to classical. All compositions are original featuring the maligned viola as solo instrument accompanied by combinations of harp, piano, string bass, accordion and wind chimes. Excellent musicians. Enjoy!
