Album Notes

Colleen is a unique songwriter and vocalist. Her latest release, Inhabited Woman offers a brilliant array of material- that is thought-provoking, moving, political and fun! The songs of Inhabited Woman give new meaning to the word original. This CD is a labor of love and commitment to social and environmental changes, and offers a sonic imaginative vision of what the world could be. Colleen’s impressive vocal work leaves the listener with a lot of variety – from country playful tracks featuring the skills of musicians like acclaimed guitar and mandolin man, John Rossbach to soulful compositions underscored by the beauty and brilliance of cellist Hank Roberts, to solo cuts that reveal Colleen’s impressive vocal range and imagination, this album is one that will be played over and over- and the listener will find more and more of its richness with each listen. Bonus tracks include a recording of the late Jolie Rickman’s powerful anthem Woman Nation.

Inhabited Woman
author: Joe Radoszewski
Colleen's gifts of song and composition are uniquely individual, complementing her commitment to present the realities of war; and the hopes of peace, environmental integrity and social/political justice. Her radiant smile exposes the joy coursing thru her soul as she belts out knock down bi- lingual tunes with bluegrass, blues, pop, and folksy flavors; or softly soothes your senses with timeless soulful melodies loaded with surprising lyrics. I have listened to IW many dozens of times and it continues to refresh and present unheard lyrics and meanings as they emerge from hiding. No good way to compare Colleen's multiple and complex range of sounds to other artists: J. B., J. M., L. D., G. S., K. M., et al. One would only do injustice by attempting to box her. Tuning in hearing her sing, you might be pressed to know who was singing ... but would surely beg, "Who is that? Wow!". Colleen engages the essence of who we are and who we need to become ... expressed thru the beauty and lingering aether of her sound: music inspiring, exciting, cosmic and most of all, unsettling. She has gifts the mind, the heart and the soul can all wrap around. One feels a bit of being one with that which has inspired her to write and to sing and to believe in the spirit of our interconnectedness with each other, the earth and with God thru penetrating, emotionally charged lyrics, melodies and acts of universal oneness. I could say something elegant about most every piece; praising upbeat tunes, haunting lyrics, unexpected lyrics with catchy tunes, bluegrass, folk, poetry, blues; unspoken questions asked to conspire. But why? You be the judge as you embrace her distinct style thruout ... as you engage that ethereal essence and earthly empathy she eagerly and well embraces herself. I don't speak lightly adding Colleen Kattau to the outstanding coterie of activist singers who have proceeded her as she continues to inspire. Hey Colleen, hope to see you perform next year for the closing of the SOA. Thanks for doing what you do.

COLLEEN - This is my favorite album of the past year. You've always been a wonderful performer, and this is an incredible album. [Side note] I've been collecting recordings of "Hard Times" for many years, and have always loved Mavis Staples' version best... but yours is right up there with hers. CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT CD!
