A native Californian, Katy Boyd has been making things up for years. She grew up listening to American and Irish folk music, and Tchaikovsky. She won a prestigious song writing contest in Northern California the year she left university which brought her to the attention of Virgin Records in the UK. Without hesitation Katy packed her bags and headed to England to pursue her record deal. The Virgin deal dried up after a few months, but Katy wasn’t quite ready to come home, so stayed for another 25 years.
Katy gave up playing and devoted herself to raising kids and messing about on boats. When her marriage fell apart in 2004, Katy went back to playing music full time and landed the record deal that had brought her to England so many years before. She has toured Europe and the US, played some of the biggest music festivals in the world (Glastonbury, Bath Festival, Brighton Fringe, and the very prestigious Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival – all in the UK). Her debut album “Ain’t No Fairy Tale” with fiddle player Ben Wain was in the top 50 of the RMR Folk Chart several times in the summer of 2010.
Katy has just recorded this great second album in Nashville with producer Thomm Jutz (Nanci Griffiths). She will be recording a duo album with Marty Atkinson (Cactus Choir) in November with Thomm.

KATY BOYD/Paper Hearts:
author: MIDWEST RECORD – CHICAGO, IL – JANUARY 31, 2012
There’s something about living what you write that adds the blood and humanity to the work and Boyd is one of those singer/songwriters that walks it like she talks it. Coming back to music after a while away and finding herself in the midst of a bunch of Nanci Griffith hands, Boyd is one of those golden low key fires that burns like the original Chanukah candles. Practically a distaff Billy Joe Shaver, this is some of the meatiest songwriting this side of Townes Van Zandt. If you love the genre, be sure to check this out, it’s a winner throughout.
