You might have already heard Katy Stephan’s solo voice.
She can be heard on the opening and closing credits to the Warner Bros. film Catwoman and throughout DreamWorks\' Time Machine, the Sci Fi Channel miniseries EarthSea, and many other films, television shows, and advertising.
During her years with the Pacific Mozart Ensemble, Katy was a soloist on the Grammy-nominated Mass with the Deutsche Philharmonie under conductor Kent Nagano, and performed in the Meredith Monk 40th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall. Katy has also recently been a soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony under Michael Morgan, for Stephen Sondheim\'s Follies, and Bernstein\'s Mass.
Katy has performed in Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Cyprus, the U.K. and the U.S. with various groups & projects.
She has been a singing salad for Dole, a backup singer for an Elvis impersonator, and the chirpy voice of more than one children\'s toy.
Katy has created original music for several live theatre productions in association with Upon These Boards, including Under Milk Wood (Porchlight Theatre), Word For Word\'s Three Blooms (Magic Theatre), Lysistrata Project (Berkeley Rep), Bury The Dead (Cooper Union, New York City) and The Inkwell Communiques.
She won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 2005 for her role as Luisa in The Fantasticks at San Francisco Playhouse.
After a decade of making music for a living, Katy crept off into a room alone with a piano to create her own songs. She then collected inspired performances from some of her favorite musicians, including Ara Anderson on trumpet and sousaphone, Alex Kelly on cello, The Blue Belles (vocalists Karina Denike & Christy Winn), Aaron Novik on clarinet, and Eric Perney on upright bass.
The resulting songs are beautifully crafted sonic valentines made from scraps of Chopin nocturnes, Puccini arias, vintage glass glitter, angels prayers, musical jewelry boxes, and a bloody beating heart.
\"The lyrics fly around like gold and gravel in a pan in some river where fools and magicians squat & hope.\" - Randall Stuart

A valley is singing
author: Rune Kjær Rasmussen
I imagine being in a valley after a tiring walk with a picnic basket and sitting on soft grass. I imagine being so lucky as to have these songs with me and the possibility to hear them right there. This is romantic, beautiful and extremely charming music which carries me away on winds of velvet and make splashes in soulful waters. Katy Stephan´s album is simply a very addictive box of treasures. Take your canoe and follow this river.
