Mighty powerful and memorable music
author: Joe Ross
Playing Time – 39:39 -- Traditional and acoustic music is solidly grounded and grows profusely in the fertile valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains where the states of Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina meet. Vocalist Katy Taylor may be best known for her work with Alternate Roots, a band with Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman, Willard Gayheart, Randy Pasley and Tony Testerman (see www.mayberryrfd.com/alternate). Besides a few members of her own band, Katy calls upon Josh Scott, Lisa Baldwin, Carson “Shotgun” Cooper, Linda Lay, Vickie Austin, Hugh Sturgill, Billy Hawks, Tony Reece, Glen Rose, Brown Burleson and the Hog Elk Quartet. This large cast is a testament to the great musicianship in that part of the country.
Katy covers some visceral material drawn from popular, country, bluegrass and Gospel music. Her lead vocals are heard on nine tracks. She opens with nice covers of Pat Ballard's "Mr. Sandman" and Paul Craft's "Blue Heartache." She also sings splendid renditions of Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," Eddie Raven's "Back in the Country," and Jim Eanes' "Baby Blue Eyes." Just as compelling are the three tracks (Blue Blue Day, Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues, Gone At Last) with the more rustic lead vocals of Lisa Baldwin, an educator and performer who presents an interactive children’s music program called Learning Through Song.
Katy Taylor gives us some passionate crooning and robust vocals that are delivered with plenty of personality. With the distinctive stamp of some exceptional accompanists, the resulting music is mighty powerful and memorable. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
