Album Notes

The latest to come out of the musical Mecca that is Oberlin (Liz Phair, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Northern State), Katy vs Evil is an alternative pop rock band fronted by Katy Gunn, a classically trained violinist, vocalist, and former concert master of the Oberlin Conservatory Chamber Orchestra. Gunn's formidable, acrobatic voice, technical ability, and eclectic style - an amalgamation of electronic, pop, classical and rock - has drawn inevitable comparisons to fellow femmes Fiona Apple and Tori Amos, while subtly forging a vision uniquely her own.

Katy vs Evil's debut album was produced by film composer and programmer, David Majzlin, who has worked with artists Lou Reed and Fernando Saunders. Simply titled Volume 1, the group's first release reflects on the precarious nature of love, the simplicity of humility, divine tales of sexual obsession, and the superheroes we sometimes need to be in order to escape the mundane, monotonous existence that threatens all of us.

A writer who is anything but predictable, Gunn favors violin solos over guitars, hyper - kinetic breakbeats of Drum n Bass over anthemic rock, the cinematic drama of Trip Hop over the ballad, and the passions of the traditional Tango (which features renowned bandoneon virtuoso, Raul Juarena (Chesky Records). It's the kind of album you put on after a breakup, before being fired, and any time you feel the need to know where you've been, but are unclear as to where you need to go next.

One might ask, if this is Katy, who is Evil? According to Gunn, Evil represents "façade - the illusion of the importance of superficiality and the false notion that perfection is the ultimate goal. I think that mistakes are what make people human - living and learning - not packaged ideas and computer programs...although I have to admit - a computer-animated version of Katy Gunn is underway as we speak..."

That voice. The violin and piano. Blew me away.

I love this CD. Her voice is amazing who also happens to be an extremely talented musician. The violin works so well. KVE contains many different styles and some strong lyrics. Each time I listen I hear something new.

I am extremely happy with the quality of the music on this CD. If ever given a chance to see her live I would do so and advise anyone who does have the chance to see her to do it.

What a great album. I'm talking it stayed in my CD player for a couple of days straight (and since I do a lot of driving during the day, that equals about 8-10 listens). Last night, I was a bachelor, so I worked on the house till o'dark thirty. I brought that puppy in and, again, played it a bunch. The strength of the material holds up with other albums by some old pros. I was also cranking LED ZEPPELIN, AEROSMITH, MOURNING WIDOWS, & POPULATION 1. Plus there wasn't a song I'd skip. The production was very clean and crisp with a very straightforward, but not overly safe, approach toward the mix / instrument placement. But, then there are so many little snippets of ear candy all around. It's like a `Blazing Saddles' movie where you can't catch all the good parts on the first couple of passes. Truthfully, this album is the REAL DEAL. The bass playing...rocks! Ms. Gunn . . . well, all I can say is that I'm married to a Diva voice, so it is even more obvious to moi that this girl has `it.' And if it wasn't for the fantastic writing and her having her own sound, it would almost be a shame she wasn't in an eclectic cover band touching on everyone from The PRETENDERS, to CONCRETE BLONDE, to MADONNA, to even Ms. STREISAND. And I CANNOT leave out the other musicians, who were top notch and are obviously big assets to the sound as well. IMHO, if they don't already, KATY vs EVIL needs representation, now! 86 the day jobs and start hitting some other areas of the Eastern Seaboard (i.e., Atlanta, Miami, O-town, Philly, etc.) There's a good chance I'll be in Nueva York in ultra early July . . . I hope I can catch a gig! In short: If you LOVE music, period . . . BUY THIS ALBUM!
