Album Notes

Kavin (pronounced like "Gavin") was born Feb. 11,1959 in Houston, and grew up in the Big Thicket woods of east Texas. He has been playing guitar and songwriting for 30+ years, but has only recently stepped out onto the stage. Asked to perform in the Oct. '98 musical production of "The Man Who Rides The Wind" (Main Street Theatre, Mansfield, Texas), Kavin was bitten by the performance bug. Perry Stewart of the Fort Worth Star Telegram described Kavin's "fine guitar work" in his review of that stage production. He was also a semi-finalist in the B.W.Stevenson songwriting competition at Poor David's Pub (Dallas) in 2000 with his songs "Over the Falls" and "Hang Up and Drive."

He describes his playing as -"eclectic acoustic," embodying elements of folk, rock & blues and utilizing both 6 and 12 string guitars. His original songs cover a variety of subjects; historical themes, science fiction and of course, personal experiences. Kavin also plays instrumentals in various styles, fingerstyle and flatpick, sometimes using alternate tunings.

"Texas Tonefreak" displays his diverse songwriting and unique guitar style. It contains seven songs and five instrumentals, which run the gamut of various musical styles:Blues ("Hang Up and Drive","Blues Jump"),Acoustic Rock ("Just Dreamin" and "My Guitar"), Country ("Headbangers,Hippies and Cowboys"),Folk ("Over the Falls","Invisible Friend","The Visitors") and finally, instrumental fingerstyle ("Jellyroller" & "Virtual Fantasy"). The album opens with the grandiose, thematic instrumental "A Kingdom of One," which features Kavin laying down some didjeridoo as well!

If you were to see Kavin perform he would play these, as well as "turbo-acoustic" covers by these diverse artists: Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, to name a few.
