Album Notes

Kaz is an award winning songwriter after her first place win in the 2003 Great American Song Contest, in the pop/adult contemporary category. She's also been recognised in her home country, Australia, by reaching the finals of The Australian Songwriters Association Song Contest,2004, and in the semi finals of a local radio station competition. She was also nominated in the New York based Outmusic Awards this year for the Best Female Debut Artist. Her style of music has been hard to define, as her writing style has been influenced by such a wide range of genres. The best description so far is by a UK journalist Kate Wildblood in Diva magazine, quote: "A Melbourne lass, her first album, "The Dinner Party", is a jazz-tinged, soul-swept funky pop venture. A tasty musical chocolate box". Her solo live performances capture the beauty and complexity of her songs, which stand up well even without the slick production of the studio.

There is so much to commend on this album.

There is so much to commend on this album. The arrangements are excellent the musicianship also. Not just there playing but the choices made of when to introduce light and dark from each instrument and finally a band that gives equal expression to the collaborators to ensure that the sum of the parts are so much more than the parts would be on their own. The vocals are always firmly placed in the centre of the singers range and no attempt is made to stretch beyond that simply because the material she is working with is so strong no distractions are required from any of the other parts. If you even begin to doubt this, contrast and compare with anything by Maria Carey and all that excessive and unnecessary warbling ! You do hear the influences I defy any one to listen to Someone else for you and not imagine Sting doing a version. Or even maybe listening to Change your Direction and mistaking it for Level 42 sans Mr Kings vocals. Thrill of Your Life has everything about it that made Sade a HUGE hit !! So we have quite a collection of popular artistic influences but to reiterate this is not simply Pop. I think the musicians here can be forgiven for the naivete in their approach to marketability they quite clearly spend their waking hours thinking music. Were a major label to have this material the marketing budget would ensure its commercial success, until that day we can all be pleased that its found the light of day through CD Baby and is yet another example of the artistic success that it champions for all those Independent Musicians. Quality will out and this is as enjoyable a listen as any of the jazz classics that I have in my library and there is precious few albums that I can say that about that generally are listed under pop.

Kaz's debut is a combination of the nicest bits of a number of genres.

Another example of sophisticated independent music, Kaz's debut is a combination of the nicest bits of a number of genres. Jazz without the abstractions, soul without the superficiality and pop without the pomp, this is like the dinner party you talk about for months after rather than the night you forgot by 9pm. Liz Giuffre, Bent Magazine, March 2004

a writer who is able to craft one infectious chorus hook.

Kaz Mitchell's album tends to emit the same level of intimacy you would expect from a dinner party. Listening to tracks like Love Triangle you feel warmth in the mix complementing her quirky pop-jazz style. Even lyrically the album tends to cover many of the topics close friends would discuss over a couple of glasses of red and a bread and butter pudding (hmm...hungry...). Try out Someone Else For You for an example of a writer who is able to craft one infectious chorus hook. Certainly, this dinner party is one that you'll leave fully satisfied and thankful for the pleasant company.

'To sink into a Kaz Mitchell song is to experience the many layers that can only be brought to music writing by a mature performer.'
