author: Michael Rainsford-Blues in Britain
"The Minister of Texas Boogie" is an apt description of of an artist whose compelling singing and playing, interjected with vocal asides, brings to mind the work of John Lee Hooker at his rawest. This set, recorded live in Desoto ,Texas;finds Williams in magificient form, moaning his brooding gospel blues over a choppy hypnotic riff on "Do You know Where I'm Comin From",laying down hypnotic Mississippi hill Country rhythms in the RL Burnside mould on "Since I Been Gone",while mixing elements of Hooker,Burnside and Robert Johnson in the plainative"I'm a Rambler". Williams vocals exude a fraility and sense of melancholy ,that is eched by his slide,on"Black Dog Bark" and Muddy's "She's Alright with Me" conjuring up a vision of a downhome Skip James.
