Cool tunes roar out of the Mill City!
author: Will Briere
Show date- 2-26-05
Spirits were up and beer was flowing at Evos Arts in Lowell Mass Saturday February 26. All to benefit a worthy cause, with proceeds going to (K.I.D.S.) Kids in Disability Sports. Some of the city’s finest talents came out to lend a helping hand. The night was a backdrop for the release of One Love’s ”The Soundtrack To Life” who dealt a healthy dose of his brand of R&B hip hop. Is it just me, or are their Wonderism’s all over this night of music in the mill city?
The main attraction for the evening’s festivities was undoubtly the performance by Jen Kearney & the Lost Onion. The group’s vibe was a sweltering heat wave, while mugs of brew were sitting well chilled on the sidewalk.
Kearney’s recorded musical roots stretch back to 1994 with the independently released “Poorhouse Sessions, Volume 1”. She is one of only a handful of players who are still breathing a musical life. The group is a unique combination of salsa mixed with a strong heaping helping of Stevie Wonder influence, throw in a Fender Rhodes Keyboard, a horn section, bluesy jazzy tunes flavored with her rhythm guitar which urges to rock… Oh yeah, her voice, that could easily be labeled the soul of the city of Lowell.
The Set itself was peppered with new material from a forthcoming disc to be released in the summer. Yet also bolstering standards, such as: “Your Wrong This Time”, “ “Peso Del Mundo” and I believe, “ I Don’t Feel”. All of these tracks can be heard on the Onion’s 2002 effort Bravery. Consequently this was one that was absent from the show, for me it would have been quite fitting since I had just seen the Academy Award sweeping film “Million Dollar Baby”. If it was in the set, you can shoot me now, kidding! Oh yes, how could I dare forget an ode to hero Stevie Wonder “Living For The City”. Overall, the performance was great but in spots slightly rushed. This was probably result of the good energy in the room.
The supporting cast included in no small part, Shay Muse & Big Ben Hillman. The diversity here in the bill represented a coming together of all people in support of a great cause-
