Soulful samba & salsa with hints of Stevie Wonder.
author: Blues BunnyAt times the Latin rhythms of the band combine with Jen’s voice to create a sort of samba & salsa soul sound that almost transports you to Rio’s Carnival or the New Orleans Mardi Gras, as with “Warm Bath Eyes”. While with “Patience Child” and “Pick Yourself Up”, you’d swear you were listening to long lost Stevie Wonder tracks, which is both pleasing and strangely disturbing in equal measure! Although generally at their best with the up tempo numbers, ironically the highlight is the more subdued and gospel inspired “Can I Get an Amen?”. Definitely recommended for those who like to search for their music of the beaten track.

After taking in the playful intensity of the horns and the bass driven soulful funk grooves that this album offers, one might be surprised to find that this 7 piece outfit hails from Lowell, Massachusetts, and not say, Cuba. The variety of styles here is mesmerizing, alternating from straight funk into more loose grooves, then pulling out the congas and utilizing other percussion elements to push the 3 piece horn section towards extremely danceable Latin jazz madness. The vocals here are golden as well, flowing through the pipes of a woman who holds genuine soul and experience inside of her. Fans of ethnic soul who prefer it spiced up with some jazzy funk elements, sweet as sugar vocals, all executed by some great players who are willing to have a really fun time with it will find this to be a true treat.
