Album Notes

From Wales, Katell Keineg first built her reputation in New York on the buzzing cafe scene around St Mark's Place and Sin-e. Following her first release on Bob Mould's SOL Records, she emerged into one of the most inspiring and deeply moving performers around, with Natalie Merchant and Iggy Pop numbering among her fans and collaborators. Produced by Eric Drew Feldman of Captain Beefheart and PJ Harvey fame, "Jet", her second album for Elektra was named one of the best overlooked pop masterpieces of the decade by Esquire, while Keineg was recently tipped by The New York Times as "a songwriter due for her own cult".

REVIEWS

brilliant album and artist
author: lilajane
This album is brilliant. It's really a pity Katell is so underrated...You should buy all her CDs, she's really one of the most talented current singer and songwriter. The influences and genres on this album are very different so that's impossible to classify it. Each track has a particular and unique strength and emotion. As the person who made me discover her said, Katell just hits on deep truths in everything she does. Her lyrics are beautiful, sensitive, poetic and enigmatic. The Gulf of Araby, Hestia in particular are masterpieces. I also love read poetry like the one on "Waiting for you to smile". Thanks Katell for sharing your talent with us...

my favorite "alternative" album of the 1990s
author: Micah L.
this was my favorite "alternative" album of the 90s. this is the best combination of composition and lyrics [Hestia, Gulf of Araby, & O Seasons are true brilliance], with clear influences of jazz, blues, folk, and 'world/celtic' music on the 'alternative' rock genre of the 90s. it's probably on my short list of albums i would need to have with me if i were ever marooned on a deserted island for a long stretch of time (assuming i had enough batteries)... check it out. and if you ever do get a chance to see Katell perform live, she's phenomenal... 'nuff said.

I first heard "gulf of araby" sang by natalie merchant. I thought that the song couldn't be performed better. Until I heard Katell! She has deep feelings for songs she plays, and it shows.

O Seasons, O Castles is a journey into the macabre, the introspective, the transcendental and the celebratory. From the first track, "Hestia" , the listener is immediately seduced into Katell's world--a world of raw truth, pain, joy, anger and hope. Lines such as "I won't accept, at this stage, everything that isn't all I want." further confirm that Katell has grown up, and grown out of old self-destructive patterns which have given way to "that proverbial" Pheonix from the fire flames. This sentiment is echoed in the fabulous "Franklin" and Ketell's independence expresses itself fiercely in the fourth-chakra throat-groans of "Paris." Truly an inspiration to all who surrender to its mystical damp watercolor world, "O Seasons, O Castles" is overflowing with drops of insight, wit, intelligence and enlightenment. I thank Katell Keineg for being the courageous songwriter and performer that she is.
