Album Notes

Singer/Songwriter Kelley Lane has finally released his debute CD after two years of on and off again writing and recording. The result is an eleven song collection of soulful melodies and small town stories that have become Kelley Lane's trademark. This self-produced album features Lane's sometimes melancholy and often humorous lyrical style which conveys stories of personal relationships, shattered dreams, and enduring love. His unique ability to take sad stories and twist them to a cheerful and optimistic melody is evident on several tracks. At the heart of his songs is Kelley's rich guitar sound which features his characteristic finger-picking and rhythmic strumming technique encased in the warm overtones of open tunings. From the opening track to the last song, you will be treated to a variety of musical stylings ranging from soft and swirling ballads to driving rock.
Ten of the songs are Kelley Lane compositions while one track, 'Jon Benett", a haunting piece about the now famous little girl which has been known to leave audiences tearful and silent, was co-written with his wife Marcie (who also provides lush harmony vocals on the album.) Although the CD does feature some fine instrumental work, it is the songs themselves that are the focal point. "That was the main idea with this album," says Lane. "I wanted to make an album where the songs are what you remember most." Whis this in mind, "Small Dot Town" is an excellent first offering from a talented artist who has much to offer in the field of Americana and roots music.
Kelley Lane has been a singer/songwriter for most of his life. Today, along with his wife Marcie, Kelley performs his songs in clubs, coffee houses, and festivals across the south, and has won songwriters showcases at places such as Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia. His music has been described as "soulful and provocative with strong melodic lines that invoke memories of earlier days when the music bonded with the listener." He uses his experience of growing up in the south, combined with a strong awareness of current social issues, and a love for children to create songs that are deep in meaning and touch the heart.

What a lovely collection. I have about worn the CD out already! Jon Benett was especially moving and I really like Love in the Living Room. It's real music for everyday people like me. Thanks. Hope to see more from you.

I see Kevin Lane also reviewed this CD. Now what is the possibility that this the same Kevin and Kelley Lane that I remember so well from my childhood days in Chattanooga, TN at Highland Park Grade School? Now wouldn't that just be a trip if it were the same people! Anyway, the music is great stuff! I liked everything I heard here. Nice work! Steve

With his solo debut, Kelley Lane has reminded us that clever songwriting is not just some lost relic. With very little production, the songs are presented in a no-nonsense, intimate setting with the vocals right up front. "City on the Bend" is worth the price of this disc by itself - an absolutely beautiful track. I'm definitely looking forward to the next release from this artist!

A superb first album of great songs for the head and heart.

In his first release, Kelley Lane has assembled a collection of songs sure to touch a nerve in just about everyone, from sentimental love songs to frisky playfulness to poignant regret and wistfulness. Among the highlights are "Ride With Me Tonight," a first rate love song with vivid imagery of midnight car rides that nearly everyone dreams of having, and "Dog Moon," which invokes southern mystery and sentimental yearning for simpler times and places. Fine writing, singing, and playing are present throughout each track, and a listen to this record will result in many more sessions with it. Kelley Lane is a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary folk scene, and this album stands up with any first release in this that I can think of. A fine work.
