Album Notes

The Drakes are a compilation of Athens Georgia musicians whose first CD is comprised of Ken Clark originals. Ken’s music has been compared to Warren Zevon, Steve Earl and The 13th Floor Elevators. He has also written the music for two musical comedy plays which have been produced in the southeast and he is currently working a third one with long time collaborator John Williams. Other members of The Drakes are as follows: Dr. John Williams has played percussion in a series of bands in the last twenty years or so. John is also a writer who has penned several musical comedies and published a novel “Lake Moon”. Sherry Joyce began singing professionally at the age of six and has recorded with such artist as ex-R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, blues guitarist Rick Fowler and many more artists. She is currently recording four songs for an upcoming compilation CD called "Northern Exposure" to be released in Canada. William Tonks has been playing guitar for about 30 years. He picked up the dobro at age 29 and is accomplished singer-songwriter. Williams bands include the following: The Cutter Travis Band, Penguin Lust, Wolfgang, Gravity Creeps, The Sunspots, Redneck Greece De-lux, Marlee Macleod and the Lonesome Choir, HorseFeathers, The Hot Burritos, Barbara Cue, The Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry. Rick Fowler has been playing guitar in bands since the age of twelve. Fowler's band Fortnox signed with Epic records. The song Storm Inside My Head went to number 44 in US Airplay and the band's video reached the top 20 on MTV. Fortnox toured the US and Canada non-stop for about a year in support of the record, headlining clubs and music theatres and opening larger concerts and stadium shows with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, The Ramones, Pat Benetar, George Thorogood, and a number of other top acts of the time. Fortnox also appeared on the CBS Records Ticket To Rock album with Ozzy Osbourne, Aldo Nova, REO Speedwagon, Randy Meisner, Paul Carrack, and others. Rick has recently signed with Jammates Records and just finished the CD “Back On My Good Foot” due for release in early 2008. He appears with The Drakes courtesy of Jammates Records.

REVIEWS

I recommend this CD to music fanatic friends.

I finally got some time to sit down and listen to The Drakes, and I thoroughly enjoyed the CD. Ken is a unique and talented songwriter, and he's got a distinctive voice. I liked the mix of rock and roll, ballads, and southern "blue-eyed soul." The two with female vocals was an interesting touch. I especially liked "In the Blood," but I guess it seems sort of tailor made for literary types. I also liked "Dorothy Liked Her Tornado Dreams" a lot. I'm well acquainted with both Rick Fowler and William Tonks (their music, I mean) from my stint as an assistant prof at UGA - 1987-1994. Good help. Some fine drumming, there, too!

Ken Clark is the best songwriter that nobody has heard of

This is a great CD full of interesting songs and great musical performances. Recording with Rick Fowler was a great idea. When I first listened to this CD it sounded so clear and crisp. It was performed with such an aggressive and exciting nature that it was great. If you like straightforward, unpretentious rock and roll, then Ken Clark is your man!
