Sometimes jazz trios can be a little dry for my taste, but not this one. This is a trio who can have fun with Santa Baby and You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch and a moment later play The Christmas Song with an understated elegance.
Displaying a command of many styles, they seemed to be at their best with some of their slower paced numbers. Their First Christmas Medley was the most moving selection on the CD; Auld Lang Syne was sweet, too. And I already mentioned The Christmas Song. Ken Foster is a versatile piano and keyboard player who has a knack for getting the sentimental mood just right on these.
But that is not to sell the Trio's faster paced songs short. They are quite comfortable playing up-tempo, such as their almost Caribbean barroom rendition of Jingle Bells.
There is something here for everyone. For example, I'm into great CD cover art, and I liked theirs a lot.

Ken, et all,
With eyes tearing I write THANK YOU!! Your music . . .there are just not words that fit this emotion! My mother sent us your CD for Christmas with the instructions “open before Christmas”. We didn’t see those instructions until Christmas morning while opening gifts with our 4 boys. To save bandwidth and typing let me tell you, the CD played continuous through New Years Eve. While moving into the New Year in all other ways, we are still spring-stepping to your tunes and enjoying the warmth they bring into our home. January 22 and it is still being played (though not continuously . . . we need to sleep sometime).Heck, I still can not listen to Santa Baby with out breaking out in an Andrews Sisters impersonation of the same . . . I am a happily married Baritone! Yes, I sometimes “ol’ satchmo” it too. As musicians we must say, this stuff is the BEST! Please keep it up. It used to be so simple.
Back in the late 1970s, when I first started collecting holiday jazz albums, the entire sub-genre probably included no more than two dozen albums (a few of which still haven't been re-released on CD, dagnabbit!).
These days, at least that many pass through my fingers each year.
As with the 2003 round-up, this year's cornucopia of wealth results in great part from an afternoon spent listening at cdbaby.com, where I found roughly half of the albums cited below…
When describing The Ken Foster Trio's "O Christmas Trio" (Foster Music, www.kenfoster.com*), bass player Brian Foster warned that it's "pretty much all over the place." He speaks truth; the album's stylistic mix ranges from a version of "Blue Christmas" re-fashioned as a countrified barrelhouse roll, to a solid rock 'n' roll interpretation of "Silver Bells" - which even begins with the opening bars from Bob Segar's "Old Time Rock and Roll" - to a lovely solo piano medley that blends "The First Noel," "Greensleaves" and "Silent Night."
Along the way, though, the trio - Ken Foster, piano; Brian Foster, bass; and Bob Macart, drums - delivers some solid jazz covers, none better than the hip-swayin' version of "O Christmas Tree" that opens the album. "Jingle Bells" is another good swinger, and you've got to love the trio's take on "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," interpreted here as a deliciously demented tango.
