Album Notes

Kentucky Snakehandlers inhabit the grey swamps of the Northwest, having brought with them their musical heritage from the psychedelic fringes of Appalachia. John Murphy writes and sings the songs while strumming his guitar and banjo. Dave Rue plays the drums and wonders when the next gig will be. Caleb Miles records while playing bass, then adds a backwards piano, a sideways organ, or an upside-down baritone guitar, then adds a bit of mojo hand and a frog's left eye to complete the sonic soup. The result is a set of songs that veer from outer space to the falling-down front porch, sounding good on headphones in a bean bag chair or spitting out of the busted radio of an old green Chevy truck. If you like Dock Boggs, Velvet Underground, Will Oldham, and Sgt. Pepper, imagine them together looking at Salvador Dali paintings, eating Corn Nuts and swatting mosquitos. Then they get in the truck and drive to the forests of the Pacific and watch the waves crashing in the rain.
