Album Notes

The year was 1998, and Josh Kauffman and Paul Duncan (Kepano Green) were beginning to explore the life of the independent musican in Los Angeles. Having just graduated from college, and in the midst of touring to support their debut album, “Live,” Kauffman and Duncan decided to keep the ball rolling, and to head back into the studio. The idea was not to come up with a full, brand-new album, but to create something that would capture and continue the spirit of that first project, a live concert recording made a year earlier.
So in early December, with a handful of songs, their guitars, and a couple of friends they’d made in L.A., Kepano Green headed into a small studio in Gardena. They played all night, with the mics running, and recorded what was to become the “Five More” EP. Quite a night. From the smooth, jazzy strains of “Angels” to the wistful ballad “Remember When,” Kauffman and Duncan put together a collection that showcases their considerable skills as songwriters, singers, and instrumentalists.
During Kepano Green’s 3-year hiatus, from ’01 to ’04, this gem of a recording disappeared for a while. But when the band reunited for the “Valley Drive” album, and the subsequent tours that followed, they decided to make their whole catalog available again. So here, for the first time in years, is “Five More.” The album captures more than just one night in a tiny California studio. It shows the early energy and promise of a young band on the rise, and it’s more than worth a listen. Enjoy.
