Album Notes

"People mistakenly assume that my disability has something to do with my wheelchair," says quadriplegic mystery novelist, freelance magazine writer, songwriter, and blues harp player, Kevin Robinson. "The real problem is that I can't sing!" That physical challenge hatched Robinson's debut CD project, FAMILY PICNIC: Songs from a Non-performing Songwriter, a compilation of his original songs, performed by his adopted "family" of talented musical friends and acquaintances.

"I just wanted to take a shot at selling a song or two, and I am overwhelmed by the number of great musicians who agreed to pitch in," Robinson says. "And thanks to help from the Brooklyn Museum of Art and graphic artist, Jody Drake (www.AwakeningWorld.com), the cover features the fitting and famous Thomas Cole painting, The Pic-nic."

FAMILY PICNIC: Songs from a Non-performing Songwriter features twelve Robinson originals performed by a wonderful collection of musicians, including Mark Calkins on vocals, guitar and harps, Charlie Lang on vocals and keyboard, Bob Malone on vocals and keyboard, Todd Giudice on vocals and guitar, Rhett Tyler on vocals and guitar, Bar Scott on vocals, Steve Stiert on vocals, Cate Tyler on vocals, Eric Benjamin Gordon on vocals, percussion, guitar, bass and keyboard, Dorraine Scofield on vocals, fiddle and mandolin, Alan Semenovich on vocals and bass, Jeremy Baum on keyboard, Bob Couse, J.B. Hunt and David Nelson on bass, Greg Busch and Donny Stroffolino on percussion.

An abject lesson in perseverance and dedication!
author: Eric Benjamin Gordon

Whoa, what's this? An abject lesson in perseverance and dedication! If any of you out there have any doubts about what this guy can do, Family Picnic will bury them for you. Even though it took three years to produce the 12 cuts in this collection, the time span is merely a measure of Kevin Robinson's perseverance, in spite of whatever obstacles he's had to get around. He knows how to utilize what skills are availible to him, even in lpposition to his own convictions. (I for one feel really honored to be included in the ranks of such skilled players as Charlie Lang, Todd Giudice, Alan Semenovich, Bar Scott, Tom Malone (who also produced my friend, Carla Ulbruch) and Kevin, himself.) And, I know you ain't heard the last of this man. BRING IT ON, KEV!

Kevin Robinson is a storyteller. This CD is a wonderful mix of New York musicians performing Kevin's songs. His lyrics are diversified, funny and thought provoking. My favorite song is Can't Be Everything. This song had a profound impact on me at a turbulent time in my life. Listen for yourself, the message is clear.

Views from South Africa

When I first heard Kev's Family Picnic I thought 'Wow! What have we here?' A picnic it certainly is, different styles, different moods and of course Kev's inimitable lyrics. This collection is somewhat like a picnic should be, full of nice surprises. In the most subtle manner his music worms its way into your soul and makes you feel those hairs standing up on the back of your neck. Kev you've done a sterling job here, your musicians and vocalists have done you proud too. Man if this is your first attempt, I can't wait to hear what you're gonna pen next! God bless to you and the rest of the gang in the US of A. Chris in South Africa.

The Family Picnic has me digesting the blues much easier
author: Charlie Lang

I didn't grow up liking blues, but Robinson's style is enetertaining and intelligent,so some of the sounds and voices have tradition,But Kevin Robinson's version of blues songs involves turns on phrases and and meaty subject matter that boast of a different approach. It's making me appreciate all blues now.But its not only blues on this album. And the ballads are sweet and up tunes have the conviction of Kevins big world. And Robinson doesn't let any important detail go,he wants to manifest the overall story he is telling,Like in his mysetery books, stories matter and people matter and Kevin matters. i'm sure he thinks you do too,we all get to appreciate this good feeling collection.
