On December 31, 2003, The Keyrats had been commissioned to play for a crowd approaching 1,000 people from the balcony of a Key Biscayne residence overlooking the Miami bay. The performance was a success, and shortly thereafter The Keyrats began receiving phone calls from local promoters interested in booking the band. Since then, The Keyrats have played at multiple popular venues in Miami including Oxygen Lounge, Bolero, Honey, Bayside Hut, Transit Lounge, Flavour, Grove Isle, Cefalo’s and the University of Miami. Other notable venues include Jewells, Boardwalk Tavern, B.E.D., and Miami’s Mega Club, Mansion.
The Keyrats have evolved into a dynamic three piece band consisting of drums, bass, guitars and two vocalists. On some nights they even feature special guests on the keyboard, timbales, saxophone, and a trombone/Trumpet horn section. Their debut album, “Dont Panic,” which was released in 2006, is a blend of their multiple diverse backgrounds, including reggae, latin funk, punk rock and jazz.
In 2007, Keyrats traveled the southeast with a 10 city tour beginning in Gainesville, FL, reaching North Carolina and ending in their hometown. Aside from playing shows in and around Miami, The Keyrats are spending much time in the studio, making plans to release their sophomore album at the start of 2009.
Keyrats aren’t simply a band fusing melodic reggae, latin funk and heavy punk rock. They represent a lifestyle, echoing their experiences of growing up on the tiny island of Key Biscayne in the beautiful city of Miami.
