=============
In December of 2002, Dale Keys left his home in Boise, Idaho, for a flight to Nashville. With 26 original songs recorded on a homemade demo CD, he arrived in Music City hoping to pitch his songs and possibly meet some of his musical heroes. The following year would bring success and experiences to Dale far beyond his wildest expectations -- he not only met many of his musical heroes, but got to record with them on this, his debut album.
Dale's voice, guitar style, and Americana-based songwriting soon caught the attention of the local songwriting community, including two of his favorite artists: Hot Rize founder Tim O'Brien, who invited Dale to perform with him in-the-round at Nashville's songwriting Mecca, The Bluebird Cafe; and singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier (Mary Gauthier's CDs are also available on CD Baby).
On a January evening in 2003 at The Bluebird, Dale recognized a singer and guitarist he'd seen on the PBS television show "Austin City Limits" years earlier: Barry Tashian, longtime member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band and leader of the legendary Boston-based 60s band Barry and The Remains.
Barry Tashian and his wife Holly are both very successful singer-songwriters in their own right (who had performed live on Garrison Keillor's 'Prairie Home Companion', the Grand Ole Opry, Mountain Stage, and E-Town, as well as singing studio background vocals for artists such as Nanci Griffith, Iris Dement, and Emmylou Harris). After hearing Dale's songs, they very generously offered to help him in his songwriting endeavors.
The following summer, in July of 2003, the Tashians set the wheels in motion to produce Dale's debut CD. They commissioned a crew of the finest session cats in Nashville, including New Grass Revival founder Sam Bush, pedal steel guitar legend Lloyd Green, guitarist Richard Bennett (of Dire Straits), fiddle master Stuart Duncan and bassist Dennis Crouch (Nashville Bluegrass Band, 'O Brother' soundtrack, 'Cold Mountain' soundtrack), and Dan Dugmore, longtime side-man to James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Rounding out the band was percussion master Kenny Malone. The album was recorded live over a three-day period, with Grammy-winning engineer Rich Adler at the helm. All of the songs on the album were written by Dale except "I'm Just Waitin'" (Barry Tashian) and "Empty Spaces," co-written by Dale with Mary Gauthier (who has also recorded the song for her upcoming release as well).
The pre-release of this album immediately landed it squarely on the Free Form American Roots Chart (http://3rdcm.austinamericana.com/), and it continues to draw rave reviews from independent and college radio stations in the U.S. and Europe.
As songwriter David Olney stated in the liner notes of the album, "Dale offers no easy platitudes, no moralistic bunko. Just the honest observations of a talented artist." (www.davidolney.com)

Live in the back country. Now CD - great either way
author: Bruce PerkinEnthralled listening to him as a solo artist off in the wilderness of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River this summer. The CD is great too. Listening to Dale is great either way.
Dale Keys - Fantastic!
author: Ron JonesDale Keys CD is one of those rare CD's where every song is great. The mix of selections is perfect. And what a performance. I hope we hear more from Dale soon.
Dale is a true songwriter, crafting and polishing stories from the heart.
author: Noelle Wainwright WarnerI first heard Dale singing from my computer on The Songwriter's Sessions from Nashville (www.wpln.org). While I usually tune in to this show sometime during the week (because all the featured artists are pretty outstanding), Dale's voice and songs made me sit still and listen. I then immediately ordered this cd. It's been in my car, going round and round, ever since. "Leaving Train" and all the other songs on this cd will take your heart, make you cry, make you laugh, dry your tears, and set you on your feet again. What can I say? Buy this cd!
Fine, well crafted songs, great music.
author: Jerry MiddaughI first heard Upside Down in Lincoln on the radio and got the album on the basis of that song. The songs are well crafted and smart. We're into some really fine music here. Tuscon Too Soon, Some Hearts, Leavin' Train are all picks. It's great to hear a new songwriter this good. Jerry Middaugh

A five star album by a great new talent
author: John MatterfaceI first heard this album whilst travelling around Ireland and immediately fell in love with it. Great songs sung with warmth and feeling with a production second to none. The BBC here in England has picked it up - it thoroughly deserves to be a world-wide success.
It's difficult to find new words for a new artist so good.....
author: Elma AlexanderIt's asking the impossible not to write about the artist of a new CD like this, when he too is new, when the songs are new and written by him. It's difficult enough to find new words - but trying to keep them short... I've got to say it, Dale Keys is a breath of fresh Country air on the Country scene and his name has to become big in the future of Country Music, as will his original songs.
Of the Human Condition, essential no BS
author: Ross FennerI am amoung the fortunate few to own one of the original demo's that Dale took to Nashville right after Thanksgiving dinner '03 as well as a "burned" copy of this new self titled wonder. Out of the box this new work of his is absolutly essential to ANYONE who appreciates the study of love, loss of love and the general condition that makes us human beings. Hats off to this fine new tallent and I look forward to ALL of his next songs.
