Album Notes

Bridge was launched by Al Urmawi center for Mashreq music, Orchestrated and arranged by Khaled Jubran.
Bridge is a unique music production that brings together 14 different instruments, among which are antique Egyptian traditional instruments, such as Rebab, Kawal, and Arghoul, combined with classical Arab instruments such as Oud, Qanoun Buzuq and percussion. In addition, Western instruments such as Viola Cello Accordeon and Bass were interpolated.
The CD consists of well-known tunes carefully selected from different Middle Eastern traditions, such as Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi and Lebanese. An old tune by Giovanni B. Pergolesi was specially arranged and orchestrated in order to fit the above-described ensemble.
The unique mixture of instruments form an innovative orchestration: the antique instruments playing vivid almost wild leading lines, combined with neat contrapuntal supporting lines - all bridged with the classical Oud and Buzuq instruments, played by Khaled Jubran.

Khaled Jubran was born in Galilee in 1961.After studying and teaching at Jerusalem\'s Rubin Academy, in 1994 he founded and headed the Arabic music department of the Palestinian National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah as well as being a member of its Oriental Music Ensemble. In 2000, he founded the Urmawi Centre for Mashriq Music, named after the Abbassid musician. An independent institution, the centre brings together Palestinian musicians, teachers and students, preserving existing or potential practitioners\' knowledge of the musical heritage, producing contemporary music and putting on performances throughout the country.
He is a master player of Oud and Buzuq, a music theorist and a prominent educator.

Khaled Jubran's recently released second album consists of personal compositions, improvisations and several entirely original interpretations of classical Arabic pieces. In contrast to his first album which was primarily strings buzuq and oud, this album features a large group with some unusual instrumentation, and whereas his first album was a vehicle for his virtuosity as a performer and skill as a composer this album showcases his talents as an arranger and interpreter. There are several songs here which are worth the value of the entire CD. Among these are the sublime shedd el-hezam, emm el-khelkhal and que ne suis-je la fougere, an eastern interpretation of a western composition from the early 1700's. The last two pieces are so visually evocative that they seem like soundtracks to a dream. So visual that they should in fact inspire movies in their own right. If you listen, you will know what I mean. The superb quality and meditative mood is consistent throughout the album. All in all, this one of the most interesting recent albums to be released in the Arabic music scene. Importantly, while it remains a serious work it also succeeds in "swinging" and thus truly has something to offer everyone. Highly recommended without reservation for all lovers of music, eastern and western!
