For years I’ve wanted to do an album where I could explore the organic simplicity and power of American roots music. “One Small Corner of the World” was inspired by seeing families move farther and farther out of the city into the suburbs, barricaded in homogeneous gated communities. My song is about another option, which is to live in a multicultural neighborhood where people still visit over the backyard fence, wander down to the house where the garage band is tuning up, or slow their cars down for the kids playing football in the street.
Other songs cover a famous Route 66 landmark, a humorous perspective on relationships, the power of dreams, and a last look at my old school destined for the wrecking ball. I’ve already integrated several of these songs into my live performances and it’s gratifying to find people really connecting to the music and lyrics.
