Description
Kid Wezel is the alter ego of Wezel and Shady Rosy. She is a Canadian singer/songwriter based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.


History

Born in England and brought up In Portugal, Kid Wezel (Kid Wezel was the pet name given to her by a musician friend - and it stuck.) was brought up to love music - from the classics to pop and jazz.

She was given guitar and piano lessons, and was sent to the Royal Conservatory - unfortunately these early efforts were unsuccessful. However, even though the formal training was a flop, she continued to increase her love of music, and eventally, when she emmigrated to Canada, she began to take guitar lessons again, and soon began writing songs.

For a few years she sat in on song cirles, joined in sing-songs and practiced guitar. As time went on, she began to seriously write songs and think about recording.

Finally - thanks for several musician friends, she was able to begin recording.

Recently, thanks to the borderless quality of cyberspace, she has been able to carry out various internet collaborations with other artists. Track 1, Shady Rosy, Track 5, Season of Your Heart, Track 7, Freight Train with Burnin' Vernon, Track 9, Ridin' Around With the Rag Top Down, and Track 11, Set in Sand, are all internet collaborations to a greater or lesser extent.

Group Members
Tim Johns (the lead guitar player for a Toronto group called the Meteors) has done guitar arrangements for many of her demos. Tim has been doing all the recording for Kid Wezel since 2003. In 2003, she hooked up with jazz bassist Alfred Gertler who has done some song arranging for her. Alfred can be heard on Tracks 2 and 3.

In 2004 she started working with bassist/multi instrument musician Michel Plourde, you can hear Michel on Siren Call.

Jazz pianist Ron Davis and Sax player Patricia Wheeler, have also contributed to Wezel songs... You can hear Ron on and Patricia on Lay the Blame and Cry Cry Cry.

More recently she hooked up with bassist Tony Laviola. Tony is collaborating on a new Country album - soon to be completed - called Shady Country Lanes.

Tony has played, arranged and/or co-written most of the songs on this upcoming album.

Style
Kid Wezel loves many different genres of music and likes to write in various styles : Jazz, blues, country, world and folk, pop, rock, electronic, funk.

Wendy Carlos, Beethoven, Grieg, Wagner, Mussorsky, Dvorjak, Debussy, Nash the Slash, Kraftwerk, Stan Rogers, Patsy Cline, Petula Clark, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Nat King Cole, R.L. Burnside, The Four Lads, The Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, Sarah Vaughn, Beatles, Billy Joel, Carlos Jobim, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, and the list goes on....

Sounds like
Kid Wezel's singing has been compared to Blossom Dearie, Patsy Kline, and Norah Jones, but most agree that she has a style of her own and a sweet and sonorous voice.

    Now this is a fun CD! .......... It's mostly blues but a touch of singer/songwriter in there too. .......... The last cut is completely different, first listen, I was not sure I liked it, but the combination of the really nice guitar work and the layered vocals just grew on me. My favorite cut is Season of Your Heart. Loved the lyrics and loved the plain, unadorned way it was recorded. The Kid has a sweet voice ..... I would love to hear her singing country ......

    I really love this CD, because it has all original material on it - no covers of standards, and it has diversity. You don't get bored listening to it, and you can't really predict that the next cut will be a particular groove. While Kid keeps the tunes coming, she keeps the variety up...... Track one, Shady Rosy is my all time favorite. This is a great arrangement of the orginal tune (which was a hit for Charlie Solack back in the '70s) the original was in a pop/rock/dance style .... The way the Kid sings it and the way Tim Johns plays is awesome. ........ I also really enjoyed Siren Call. Sweet and sultry, and the harmonics delivered by the bass - just gorgeous......The Matt Borczon tune "Season of Your Heart" is whimsical and sweet. I love the simplicty of the arrangement and the delivery. Matt's lyrics are great........... The big surpise for me was the last cut. "Set in Sand". This cut is way different from the rest, and shows a completely new side to the Kid! .........Overall, there really wasn't a cut on the CD that I didn't enjoy. Keep up the good work, young lady!
