First album of the Kielbasa Kings, but definately not the last!

What can I say, The Kielbasa Kings did VERY well for their first recording, not knowing how the public would react to their sound. Lets just say WE LOVED IT VERY MUCH. I did enjoy the sound and instruments they used, not using too much brass or accordion, but a excellent mixture. The vocals were very well taken care of, and the traditional-modern is a sound very few bands can pull off, but the KK did it very well. I liked this album as well as other friends and family of mine, I think the KK have something here, and it can keep being improved with more trial and error. Keep up the work guys, you will get the sound you want with more work and another recording! (4 Stars)

Are you Fresh and Smoked?
author: Edward Burke, College DJ, and dare I say it, new polka fan
Ahh....polka. Love it or hate it, it's a genre of music you can dance, sing along, clap your hands and drink to.
I think that the Keilbasa Kings deliver pretty decent polka music on this, their debut CD. They've got some good traditional Polish offerings, but I'd say it's their so-called "alternative polkas" that really stand out on the CD, such as the waltz treatment of Elvis Costello's "Alison", and the trumpet-heavy version of "Blister in the Sun" by the Voilent Femmes, interspersed with everyone's favorite "Chicken Dance" to keep things moving....and by "things", I mean your feet and the beer rushing through your system.
There are some notable trad. tunes on the disc, especially the instrumental "Krakowiak" with a shnazzy accordion intro, becuase what would polka be without the accordion? Jazz or bluegrass?
Other tracks of note are the "Happiness Polka", "OJ Dana"recorded live on the radio, and the "Keilbasa Kings Medley", a group of traditional songs devoted to the pink, pickled meat sausage that is the band's inspiration. Personally, I eat maple syrup with my keilbasa, instead of the sauerkraut and cheese mentioned in one of the songs....it's a Vermont thing.
This is a great album, and I highly reccomend it, knowing full well that I've added a new item to my "guilty pleasures" list.
