Killed by Bears is comprised of four of the five members of respected Portland indie-folk band "Dearest, Crown". Over five years "D,C" recorded two albums and performed throughout the Northwest. "Dearest, Crown" was a band difficult to categorize; a mix of folk, bluegrass, and bowed instruments, the music delightfully blurred traditional classifications (chamber pop, avant-folk, and space-grass among them). As Killed by Bears, the musicians find themselves down one member, with a new name, and led by a new songwriter with an unapologetic love for the jangle/power-pop of the 80s and 90s. Listening to KBB, it is hard to miss the alt-country harmonies and folk influences of "Dearest, Crown", but the mandolins and fiddles have been cautiously put aside for louder amplifiers and plugged-in guitars. And while KBB has successfully found a way to fit more squarely into the world of indie-pop, they have done so without losing the endearing alt-country ballads, mid-tempo jangle, creative instrumentation, and passion for music that made "D,C" so appealing. Killed by Bears released their eponymous debut CD in the summer of 2007.

Just Great!

A thoroughly enjoyable and melodic lo-fi indie rock record from start to finish. There's not a bad song in the bunch! I hear echoes of Nothing Painted Blue, Sloan, and a bevy of alt-country troubadors in their writing. Will they ever be heard from again? I sure hope so.
