Album Notes

Only eight years old, Kimbal could barely reach the far end of the fret board when he first toured Western Canada playing bass. He picked up the bass at age five, guitar at seven, and drums at ten. In his early years, he bummed rides to Saskatoon to play at the Bassment's Tuesday night jazz jams. Kimbal and his younger brother were heckled as "the kids," but in that dim smoky club they learned to trade solos with Saskatoon's veteran jazz players.

Kimbal spent hours locked in his bedroom teaching himself the licks of finger-style guitar greats such as Bruce Cockburn, Don Ross, Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. Now in his twenties, he has established himself as a sought-after studio musician and live performer in Saskatoon, playing with well-known prairie folk musicians such as Dale Nikkel, Eileen Laverty and Crooked Creek. He has also shared the stage with two-time Juno award winner Steve Bell.

Kimbal's taste for simplicity is illustrated beautifully on his first full-length solo CD, In My Own Words. Released in April 2004, this instrumental album captures Kimbal's polished finger-style guitar talent. These sophisticated arrangements sound like there must be more than one guitar track, but there's not - Kimbal's live solo sound is this textured. Sometimes soothing, sometimes driving, his songs soar melodically. In My Own Words sits you down with Kimbal in his living room beside the wood stove. Kimbal brings this same honest and unassuming presence to the stage, drawing the audience deep into his music.

"This album is spectacular. New tunes from a fabulous talent with musical skills that make the guitar sing like a bird."
- Renee Gelpi, Galaxie CBC Digital Radio

"A slice of guitar heaven"
- The Pictorial, Duncan, BC (Sept 19, 2004)

"Tremendous playing, beautiful compositions."
- Jack Semple, Regina, SK

"I've been a fan of Kimbal Siebert for years. He is an excellent fingerstylist who has helped me with my own playing on more than one occasion. However, with his debut album, In My Own Words, Kim proves himself more than a technician, but rather a true musician, a champion of beauty and a contemplative soul. In My Own Words is a fine, fine work deserving of a wide audience."
- Steve Bell, Winnipeg, MB

I play In My Own Words more often than all my guitar soloists combined. Talent, polish, yes, but most of all the soul comes through.

Excellent writing, wonderfully smooth technique, perfect music to relax to.

This is a unique album in a genre that is absolutely jam packed with excellent artists and recordings. Kimbal really puts a personal mark on his playing and writing. His excellent technique is evident, although that's not the most enjoyable thing about the CD - the music comes through first and foremost.

Highly recommended CD by a talented new artist

Kimbal Siebert is one of those rare acoustic guitarists whose talent and skill enables him not only to play beautifully, but with great feeling and variety of moods. His compositions on this CD range from upbeat, rhythmic pieces to expressive and delicate explorations of melody and dynamic shadings. For example, in "The Wind and Wheat", Kimbal's flowing dynamics and cross string patterns perfectly capture metaphorically the wind blowing through a field of wheat, something this Saskatchewan musician has no doubt seen much of. His Improv 1 & 2, recorded spontaneously in the studio, captures the spirit of improvisation effectively and take the listener with him through the entire piece. His song, "If You Were Mine" strikes a true balance between form and poetic expression. Fingerstyle players will appreciate the innovative ideas Kimbal brings into his playing in terms of string crossing, parallel 5ths in melody lines, dynamic control and excellent sychronization of his right and left hands. Most listeners, however, will simply sit back and enjoy the great moments of enjoyment and satisfaction that this CD affords. Highly recommended!
