Album Notes

This rare Inner City recording, originally released in 1981, features jazz vocalist Teddi King with piano great Dave McKenna. King enjoyed a succesful career, having played with the likes of McKenna and George Shearing, and has amassed a bit of a cult following with her singing in the style of greats Lee Wiley, Mildred Bailey and Mabel Mercer. Here, King and McKenna perform 13 selections from Ira Gerswhin's classic catalog.

Great to See Available

How nice to see this album available again in CD. This is bittersweet, as TK didn't live to complete it, & 5 songs are McKenna instrumentals. But in a way that makes it an interesting Gershwin album. Though she was ill then, I think her vocals are quite strong-- except for just the occasional reediness. But the intimate format suits & she always had a real affinity for lyrics-- esp. on ballads. I think some contemporary listeners might compare her a little to Weslia Whitfield-- but Teddi was unique really and this late session is very worthwhile and good for showing her jazz side, if not a substitute for her excellent '50's albums on Storyville & Verve.
