For a lot of folks four decades may seem like a lifetime .Not so however for "Little Tubbis"as he was known then. .It is a period of time which he has spent at the head of the class. Promoting the music between yard and abroad. From the very humble surroundings of Cockburn Pen in the volatile Kingston 11 area to the bright lights and big city of Chicago. King Tubbis has built up a huge following and up to this day continues to earn respect for his musical creativity.
While growing up in the Kingston 11 community, an area that spawned some of the islands best known reggae practitioners, Tubbis began taking the music seriously around age 11 penning songs over nursery rhyme tunes during school recess and lunch breaks. In the 1960's there were two kinds of dance hall music, one was known as Disco Tek which was simply a record player/changer some speakers and an operator. The other was known as a Sound System that consisted of more sophiscated equipment and larger speakers that delivered a richer and more powerful sound.
Little Tubbis soon became the talk of the town, being the first sound man to hook up the Christmas pepper-lights to the bass speakers so that they'd blink on and off to the beat of the heavy driving bass line, he was the first person to play a sound system at the Parish Church in Kingston, Jamaica in the 1960's
With the migration fever breaking out across the Caribbean in the late 60's Tubbis right away wanted to expand his horizons and moved to the south side of Chicago where he re-established his sound system known as "King Tubbis Hi-Fi, he then opened a record store, selling and promoting the music and as business progressed he started booking artists in local clubs and venues. A federally licensed broadcaster Tubbis took the music to the airwaves hosting the Tubbis Connection radio show for two years.
Being the first person to sell Reggae in the state of Illinois, he also was the first one to play reggae in the park and on the beach.
Because of his great love for music and his many connections as a promoter, he wanted to take his music to a higher level and started producing, Working with artists such as Bob Marley, Luciano, Buju Banton, Sugar Minott and Frankie Paul, just to name a few.
Now with over forty years in the business along with his very popular sound system recording studio and record label known as "King Tubbis Records" he is still going strong in the new millennium having received many accolades for his dedication and contributions to the Reggae music industry.
In keeping with the times King Tubbis is now venturing into a new generation of hip-hop and R&B productions.
