A truly fun way to introduce kids to America's music- the BLUES! Interactive and inspiring, this CD is kid tested and approved with 3 years in Portland Public Schools (OR) as a disc, 6 years of live presentations.

"The absolute best musical presentation we have EVER had!" Carus Elementary School,January 2003
Donors of "Community 101" Grant to Blues In Schools, 2002.

"Your Blues In Schools presentation was wonderful! The Portland Community Colleges "Art Beat 2003" thanks you!" Doris Werkman, PCC Sylvania "Art Beat" Council Chair

"The disc and performance are excellent...I am already referring professional educators to the disc..." Steven Anderson, Western Oregon University College of Teaching

Blues In Schools CD was recorded live at Ethos-Inc. (Portland Or. music and performing arts non-profit dedicated to underserved youth) by Nathan Merrill with grant monies from the N.E.A. and Ethos sweat equity.

Blues In Schools CD features NW award winning duo of Stu Kinzel & LynnAnn Hyde (guitar, voice, harmonica and button accordion) and is an exact recording of their school aged Blues In Schools presentation program.

The seven panel liner notes include fun facts about the Blues, geographical styles, artist profiles and photos! Everything is written with the school aged child in mind.

The disc includes narrative introduction to American Folk Art, information regarding African storytelling traditions and the relationship between African Folk art and Blues music. The narrative and song selections describe the exact nature, origin and SOUND of America's very first art form--the Blues! Every selection is age-appropriate, and has been kid approved through countless live presentations to over 200,000 children in Oregon alone since 1997.

Artist profiles, introduction to Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the works of preservationist John Avery Lomax, how to count the beats in a measure and the measures to a verse, how to provide a back beat, call & response and traditional Blues arrangements are discussed in a kid-friendly narrative form with plenty of interactive portions. An introductory "primer" is incorporated into the eight panel liner notes, and reinforces the narrative and encouragement to develope musical skills. The narrative and liner notes introduce Smithsonian Folkways titles and the availability of recorded and written documentation of traditional American music at our public libraries nation wide.

This disc supports and encourages children to learn musical disciplines, write songs and carry on the traditions of the American Folk Artist. The narrative reinforces common American themes in storytelling and musical arrangements.

author: Steve Anderson, Professor of Education Western Oregon University
Standing by itself, this CD is a prize to any of us interested in the origins of Blues music. Combined with the kid specific narrative, interactive portions and excellent musicianship of Stu Kinzel and LynnAnn Hyde the disc is highly recomended to educators and parents looking for a way to encourage children to explore and participate in their own musical heritage. As a Blues lover, and educator in Portland Public Schools for many years, currently serving as Adjunct Professor training future teachers and mentors, my hat is off to Kinzel & Hyde. Their dedication, leadership and artistry is making it possible for our children to enjoy and learn from America's original art, the Blues. A wonderfully informative and entertaining disc/presentation.
author: Doris Werkman, Portland Community Colleges
The Blues In Schools disc and presentation was a wonderfully entertaining and informative addition to Portland Community Colleges "Art Beat 2003". The disc is an excellent introduction or refresher for the Folk/Blues enthusiast or novice. The encouragement to explore music and storytelling, interactive portions requiring child participation and age appropriate song selections reflect the over-all mastery of the music Stu Kinzel and LynnAnn Hyde have acquired over their many years of performing. Even though this disc is geared toward the school aged child, the performance given by Kinzel & Hyde is satisfying to anyone who is a fan of American Folk/Blues music. Doris Werkman, PCC "Art Beat 2003" Chair Sylvania Campus
