Singer/songwriter Kira Small just plain gets modern soul and classic R&B, with a voice that oozes intimacy, playfulness, and vulnerability all at once. But on her third album Raise My Voice [Offrow Records], Small finally got herself, arriving at a personal and musical destination with a newfound power, a deeper confidence, and a sense of personal arrival. From the first groove of “Make Up Your Mind” (fueled by legendary Motown bassist Bob Babbitt), to the gospel-tinged anthem “I Will Raise My Voice,” to the smoldering sass of “Say My Name” and “You Gonna Regret Losing Me,” and even the pugilistic threat of “Hootchie Mama,” Small’s bringing it loud, proud and unafraid.
