The Kitchen, Original. The Kitchen, Groovy. The Kitchen, Candy for the ears. This band will make it big. This album is the best purchase since Avril Lavigne for us Vancouverites. Do yourself a favor, listen to one song: This Message. Funk, Rock and Soul have not been mixed in such a fashion.

The Kitchen

I was excited to hear that Vancouver locals The Kitchen recently pressed their first professionally-mastered full-length, because it's a treat to be able to hear all the intricacies of their music that you miss in their (otherwise excellent) live shows.
The self-described "funk, rock and soul" band proves just how well such a blend can work on this disc, utilizing funk-ass riffs, breaks, basslines and melodies to make you wanna put on your dancin' shoes. The album varies from the slow-rolling grooves of Come On to the soulful wiles of Flying to the body-moving rhythms of No Fakin'.
But these boys don't just know how to write an excellent song; they're also damn fine musicians. The band's singer, Josh Hundert, is the star of the band with a voice you'd expect to come out of a man three times his size, and styles ranging from dancehallish rapid fire to crisp-toned crooning. With both an acoustic and electric guitar in the band, the melodic potentials of the songs are fully exploited. The band's rhythm section, who gets a chance to show off in their duo in This Message, propels the funk in every song.
So if we could manage to drop our post-punk power-pop pretense for a moment, I'm confident we'd all be able to discover a solidly talented act with a sound entirely its own in our city's The Kitchen. They play with Freeflow and Smaq-u2 at The Lamplighter Fri Mar 24th. I'm expecting yet another good show, and I'll tell you right now that you can do the same.

Get your groove on with Vancouver-based The Kitchen
author: Chris White
Get your groove on with Vancouver-based The Kitchen. Their single "Flow" is a brilliant display of funk and rock peppered with heartfelt soul and a splash of orchestral ska that will keep you on the dance floor. Joshua Hundert's vocals are in the same league and style of legendary singers including Robert Cray, Billy Preston, and Carl Douglas; simply amazing. Andrew Park and Iisak Andreller deliver remarkable fretwork on guitars combined with the passionate bass of Adrien (Earl) Fillion heartpounding drums of Luke Cyca. The melodies cover a wide range of contemporary vibes that could easily find it's way to CHR and Hot AC stations across the country. If you're looking for a fresh new sound that knows how to keep it real while maintaining a consistent level of energy and appeal look no further than The Kitchen.
