I heard most of this album delivered live at the Firefly Club in Ann Arbor on July 28 of 2006, with the same personnel sans sax, and was awestruck by Kittel's genius, and the improvisational freedom, interply and tightness of the entire group. Aside from fresh interpretations of some standards, and beautiful new compositions by Kittle, I enjoyed the aire played as a duet with one of my favorite jazz pianists, John Nam. The interlude reminded me of Machlis & Fraser's, The Road North, but I was soon reminded of this Quartet's ability to go off in any direction.
