Album Notes

The fourth CD for this Ann Arbor, Michigan songwriter, “This Road Tonight” (2001)exemplifies Kitty’s knack for drawing from both her Irish heritage and her midwestern roots in the music she writes. With 9 songs and 3 tunes, she relies on fiddles, pipes, whistles and accordion, in addition to her own talents on guitar, keyboard and cittern, to bring depth, energy and lushness to her material. Produced by Kitty and multi-instrumentalist David Mosher.

“It’s been almost 10 years since Michigan-based songwriter Kitty Donohoe’s last recording...everything just sounds ‘right’. One thing that hasn’t changed in her time off is her voice; it’s as rich and compelling as ever. She has an amazing range with a flexibility that few other singers have. Donohoe’s songwriting is even stronger than it was before... [and] the songs come wrapped in beautiful melodies. Donohoe has embraced her love of Irish music and used traditional instruments...on almost every track...but it’s done in an uncluttered way that makes the songs and instrumental pieces much more effective.” Dirty Linen

“...a stirring CD with passionate songs...far above and beyond most singer-songwriters.” Rich Warren, WFMT Radio, Chicago

“a beautifully produced, well written and expertly played collection of Kitty Donohoe songs. Kitty’s voice is, well, gorgeous...take an hour and listen to it in order, from beginning to end. “ Sing Out!

“...great talent for song writing and singing. And if her ability to play many instruments well wasn’t enough to be going on with, hasn’t she a glorious voice as well!” Irish Music

“excellent set of original songs and three instrumentals ...with Donohoe’s beautiful soprano unifying it all. Donohoe is an artist well worth paying attention to.”
Victory Music Review

“It is probably to Michigan-based singer songwriter Kitty Donohoe’s benefit that she is an American artist. Given our penchant for pigeonholing, a release as subtly diverse as this would cause confusion... hopefully she will gain the same deserved recognition as Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky...a beautiful blend of the new and the traditional new...rooted in the Irish music she absorbed living in the Corktown district of Detroit [she] manages to stretch the listener by the sureness of her music... intelligent, literate songwriting infused with an inherent optimism.”
Michael Mee, Tweeddale Press Ltd, England

“exceptional...the look and feel of a masterpiece.” City Pulse
