In 1987 Michigan celebrated it’s 150th birthday and Kitty, performing in elementary schools at the time, did the obvious and wrote a bunch of songs about the state and
released them as a tape and a book, called “Bunyan and Banjoes.” The material gained popularity quickly, with teachers, parents and retirees, and in 2004 Kitty added 5 new titles to the recording and released it as a CD. The song subjects cover quite a range, including the voyageurs, maple syrup, the pasty, rivers, lighthouses, lumberjacks, the Mackinac Bridge and lots more. This is a good project for family travels! The book contains the songs charted out plus recipes, information and games and is still available through Kitty’s web site.

This is a must for all teachers of Michigan history! It is a great way to make history come alive. I use it in many presentations that I do with my students. They love this music!

I heard the Beef Pasty song on NPR and was hooked. I never guessed this was a 'children's' CD. Like Meryn Cadell or the Yoopers, good stories, good humor and excellent musicianship abound! I will be back for other CDs by this artist! ;-D
