King James
and the Serfs of Swing
is an exciting 10 piece jazz band drawing on the tradition of the Kansas City Count Basie Band and the Duke Ellington Band, Cotton Club era. With a swingin' danceable groove, hot soloists and classic vocals, King James and the Serfs of Swing plays music which conjures up the Jazz age and sets the atmosphere tingling. The band has been featured at the East Coast Jazz Festival and played Washington's "Blues Alley."
King James (aka Prof. James Levy) has been active on the Washington DC area music scene since the early eighties, performing at most area jazz clubs, the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center. He has been heard nationally on NPR's "Jazzset."
The King has been on the faculty of the George Washington University since 1984, started the Department of Music's Jazz program and from 1986 to 1995 was Director of Jazz Studies.
